Oh hey, I heard of Volound a while back. The Total War videos were okay, but beg the question of why anybody should pay attention to this dumpster fire series anymore? There's a mountain of superior strategy games out there to be played. I get the appeal of TW, a visceral on the ground aesthetic experience of strategic-action directed battle made more exciting because each battle is a part of grander plans and many hours of effort ride on the outcome, it's pretty cool, but it just doesn't work as executed by CA now and hasn't for years and years. You know other games made after 2004 aim for this and don't suck?

More on topic, Volound is a gigantic autist but seems to have genuinely been targeted for destruction by neurotic weenies who make a point of worshipping CA. I found the issue funny way back and found this while investigating. This guy pretty much did the internet equivalent of deliberately bumping into someone while walking past and then muttering "watch it faggot" and then ran to reddit making this top post after receiving a pretty damn mild response.

Total War is a mostly shit series of video games and the surrounding scene is a dumpster fire. Volound isn't the worst part of it on many counts, but this autistic drive to engage the entire internet in honourable facts and logic driven debate is completely deranged and the reason this thread exists.

I've had some more time to think about all of this and to observe what the OP and his boyfriend have done in reaction to my post yesterday. So, here's what we have so far. A few things have been clarified by their impulsive and panicked response, which is exactly what I wanted to happen.

I'm not in any kind of discord/stream-chat cult. someone sent me a video a while back and i found his war with the mostly consoomer-tier fanbase of the series funny. Joined the site to talk about Connor Murphy and just happened to recognise the name here while scrolling around to see what else is new. He doesn't strike me as offensive, just a bit ridiculous. Like someone really devoted to challenging the integrity of the current state of the GI Joe intellectual property and fanbase. The back and forth with the rest of the Total War crowd was interesting to watch.

I'd also like to talk briefly about his spat with LegendofTotalWar, as nobody else has mentioned it yet. LegendofTotalWar (or just Legend for short) is a moderately sized Australian TW youtuber. Now Australians are obviously well known for shitposts and funnies and Legend is no different, though personally I never cared much for the guy. Volound on the other hand? Well, he saw that while playing TW, Legend put his soldiers in a Swastika formation.

And that just won't do.

People are attached to the series by and large because of its scale and good mixture of turn based strategy and real time tactics that other games struggle to compete with in the same way. Another reason for a long time why people were interested was because of the historical settings, never intended to be accurate but served as interesting entry points for anyone who wanted to get immersed into the time period. That was further maintained by the extensive modding community, which is the only reason why anyone in 2021 would play older TW titles to begin with. Personally, my contrarianism is even greater than Volound's and I stopped giving CA money after I saw the direction they took the series in with Shogun 2.

Volound is a target of everyone's favorite game not because of his wrongthink but because of his history of antagonistic comments towards others and his ego the size of Jupiter. It's not like he hasn't been noticed by users on Reddit before this debacle either. Here is a screencap from a thread from 6 years ago regarding a 12 minute video where he claims he is the only one to understand the retainer system in Shogun 2, a system that people already knew was almost purely random and can be easily manipulated through save scumming much like prior mechanics in the series.

Something else worth pointing out is that much bigger Youtubers than Volound, like Pixelated Apollo, have made statements before about how they didn't like the direction the series went in and they were never nailed to a cross for it. It certainly helps that those Youtubers have never gone on public tirades over the course of months about Reddit drama in a vain attempt to garner pity and e-fame.

I started watching Legend around 2017/2018 and I remember some weird grovelling video he did to CA to try and get off the blacklist but I think it's been deleted. I couldn't find it searching his channel at least, but the fucker uploads constantly so it's probably been lost further down the list.

Now he's back in with CA again he's definitely lost his bite in terms of deliberate edge, but a fan managed to trick him into saying 'Niggers' with the old 'Shout out to Nick Gerz' superchat on a stream recently.
