We've all heard of and are probably tired of the Ugandan Knuckles meme that's infected the internet and VRchat in particular. Part of the Ugandan Knuckles meme is quoting a film from Wakaliwood called Who Killed Captain Alex? (We've got a thread about Ugandan Knuckles in the Salt Mine here. )
What is Wakaliwood? Wikipedia says:
Also, a documentary was made called Wakaliwood: The Documentary (2012). IMDB page: here. Alan Hofmanis, a film festival programmer, saw the WKCA trailer and traveled to Uganda to meet Isaac Nabwana. He was inspired enough to put together a team and return to Uganda to make the documentary.
Perhaps what has helped earn Wakaliwood (Isaac in particular) a following is that despite the poverty that Isaac and his crew live in, they had a passion to make action movies, and so they did. They made their own equipment and props. Isaac had to use recycled computers and at one point could only make one film at a time because that's all that would fit on his hard drive. Then he'd wipe the drive for the next film. They didn't let anything stop them. Kinda makes first-world problems seem even smaller.
In 2016, Isaac's film Bad Black won the audience award for best feature at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas.
Last year, Isaac embarked on Wakaliwood World Supa Tour (BAD BLACK's We Kill Everyone Equally TOUR), attending 13 film festivals around the world. Many people are learning "de way." (Hello fellow kids).
I do know that kiwis were considering watching Who Killed Captain Alex? on movie night, but I don't know if they ever did.

I Hate Everything made a video about Who Killed Captain Alex? He talked about how bad the movie was, but also how obviously everyone in the movie was having a blast even though they know it's a cheesy film. With 700k+ views, I suspect many people first found out about Wakaliwood here, although the trailer went up on YouTube 7 years ago and now has three million views, so maybe not.Wakaliwood is a nickname for the film industry developing in Wakaliga, a slum in Uganda's capital Kampala. Its main director is Nabwana Isaac Godfrey Geoffrey,[1] who has been called Uganda's Tarantino, after the gratuitous violence in his films. Wakaliwood is best known for its ultra-low budget (estimated to be in the region of $200.[2]) ultra-violent movies, such as Who Killed Captain Alex?, Tebaatusasula and the upcoming crowdsourced film Tebaatusasula: EBOLA.[3]
