I'm curious to hear testimony from tourney/event players having a scuffle with GW over 3rd-party headswaps and the like.

I'm sure it will be fine

Its not like GW is known for aggressively defending their IP rights no matter how it affects their gaming community or players... right?

right?

Not sure if posted before. Rather liking what people are doing with these in their custom builds.

I can see their forums dying off again within a year or two.

I get GW‘s point here—if you’re playing in one of their stores or tournaments, you’re basically in a commercial for their brand. Sure, their space, their rules. I have cool non-GW proxies, but I understand and I’ll leave them at home for these situations.

The problem that I have is that I am really old, and the shakes fist damn kids that work the counter at those places often don’t recognize anything that isn’t on the shelf right now or in recent memory.

I get that someone in their 20s may not know about Warhammer Historical or Confrontation, and yeah, some of those old chaos sculpts from the 80s can look kinda janky. But Mordheim was not that long ago. If you aren’t sure, you can google the old stuff.

EDIT: The new Death Guard Combat Patrol box has “spare parts” for a plague marine because GW didn’t want to bother with updating the old poxwalker sprues. One guy I played used green stuff and spare bits to turn one into a possessed with tentacles sticking out of the gaps. It looks totally awesome and I’m going to imitate it. But…

He made the mistake of saying that he used the Green Stuff World Tentacle Maker to sculpt the tentacles. Wrong answer, take it off the table.

Luckily I found a good independent retailer with great tables who doesn’t care what you play, so long as you pay the table fees.

What I want to know is where does this leave Marine players who play anything other than First Founding chapters, Black Templars or Crimson Fists. Do third party decals count?

Also, the “old models must be mounted on current base sizes” thing — fuck off. That means no old assault marines, no old devastators, and god only knows what else that they’ve arbitrarily changed the base size for in the past few years.

Actually, now that I think about it that means no old miniatures in general unless you want to take a hacksaw to them…

Wait, one of the GW Drones literally went after someone for using a Tentacle Maker? That's literally a glorified piece of plastic with grooves in it. Fucking retards.

Yeah I still don't think 3D printing is exactly there yet, to the point we can get GW quality models, but it certainly is going to happen eventually and at that point GW is in trouble because their core business is sell plastic minis.

I own a 4k resin printer.

Yes, it is absolutely at the point we can get GW quality models. The sticking point is there's not a lot of 3D modelers and GW is currently targeting people who make anything even remotely close to GW stuff. They even had a job posting a few weeks back for an intern who will be infiltrating 3D Modeling communities and reporting what they find to GW legal.

This is something that will solve itself eventually. Even faster if someone at GW leaks the official GW STL files, which absolutely will happen someday.

I agree

GW has to start to face the fact that their core business model will soon be outdated

In a manner of years 3D printers will become ever more common and people will no longer have a reason to pay GW's crazy prices. They will have to come up with a new way to make money or face extinction.

Simply creating and printing a new rule set every few years wont be enough but I gota ask, if we no longer need GW for models then what can they do? How can they adapt t such a drastic change where their base consumer activity is no longer needed.

I think they're hosed personally.

First Necron, painted it for my boss in just a few hours. Fun learning experience, gotta get better at reducing the blotchiness of the cryptek armorshade.

Basically just tried to copy the box art, didn't know how to match the colors of the hoverbutt-skirts, so just put down a base of runelord brass with druchi violet and then basilicanum grey, came out pretty decent imo.

Because convince only hardcore hobbiest care for this . On top of the fact I rarely I see people print Infinity or any other companies miniatures. It’s always people begging for 40k files rarely anything else. Technically even if you print the models and pirate whatever rules you still support the GW market share.

Here’s a situation Grog Mccheeto hands is playing a game of 40k with his super special fully printed Custodes army. Little Tommy walks into the store and is amazed by what he is seeing. Tommy has seen 40k videos online and wants to get into the hobby after seeing the battlefield before him. The store owner desperate for a sale that day gives Tommy the run down while Mccheeto hands brags saying all Tommy needs is a good printer.

Does Tommy

1. Buy what the store owner is selling after being told to buy a start collecting box

Or

2. Buy a 3D printer, make sure he has space for it, understand the difference between what material he should use, and know where to find the files he needs.

That’s just my 2 cents. Although I do think I have a somewhat unpopular take in that people think 3D printing = GWs death. What happens to the other companies? I have been looking for good Infinity Prints lately since a lot of the older infinity stuff is metal on top of my favorite army get squatted.

Wait until they‘re forced to confront the fact that we all use Army Painter and Vallejo Paints. I’m sure they already know, but eventually someone is going to show up with shiny chrome or color shift necrons.

They would be, if their profit margins didn't double over the last 4 years.

They're just being pricks, and they know they can tell the fans to "get fucked" and yet still have people come back to buy things.

This is just the GW version of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh banning fake cards from tournaments. They're within their legal rights to do so, and they know it.

There is no better feeling then having Mephiston fly across the map and then deleting an enemy warlord.
I get a similar feeling using my Emperor's Champion.
Sure, he's a bit of a glass cannon, but he hacks down enemy commanders as if they were salami.

I've been doing color shift on my power swords, it's quite nice, but man, the Vallejo Colorshift paints are hard to work with. (They're NOT paint. They're gloss varnish.)

Same goes for the greenstuffworld color shifters. They're the same.
I recently bought some of that to do the wings of my lord of change, anything I should know to get good results with it? Most i've heard is to put it on a gloss black base coat.

They work best when airbrushed, the plain brush application finish isn't as smooth. Then again, this goes for al fine metallics, just lower your air pressure to something like 15 psi and thinly mist-coat it, until the desired effect shows up. Don't thin them much because they'll just bounce off the surface of your primed mini.

Use less than you'd think you need. It's a varnish so overapplication doesn't dry, it turns cloudy. Don't try to apply another layer until the first is very very dry, because partial dry will start peeling off.

I lack an airbrush, so i'll have to hope for decent results the old fashioned way.

Will do.

Do either of you have any shots of what it looks like when dry? I got the cobalt blue one, hoping with enough coats on the main feathers that it'll give the proper tzeentchian look.
