Was the Sweetheart search Bob's Idea? -

Just thinking back to the beginning, why would Chris use the word sweetheart? Wouldn't have he have said "girlfriend"? Do you think Bob said something like you need to find a sweetheart. Obviously Chris came up with the boyfriend-free part, since too many girls told him that he was a really nice guy but they already had a boyfriend. But isn't sweetheart a very old fashion word? Or is it commonly used by American people?

it was all Chris. He came up with needing a sweetheart on his 21st birthday, when he was kicked out of English class and there was no girl there (or mom) to comfort him while he cried.

As for the words he uses, I think it's a mix of his autism and being raised by parents old enough to be his grandparents.

Chris started his love quest after he got kicked out of English class on his birthday for making homophobic remarks. There weren't any girls around to comfort him, so he decided he wanted to make a boyfriend-free girl into a sweetheart.

Yeah, usually people say girlfriend or lover instead of sweetheart in the US. There's a very strong regional effect on vocab in the US, so maybe sweetheart is more common in the Southern states. Someone else who lives in the South will have to get back to you on that. Most of the time when I heard someone say sweetheart, it's similar to using honey or dear, it's more of an endearing term.

I used the word "sweetheart" for quite some time. I think I stopped some time in late 2012. I also like using words like darling and madame and all that old timey stuff from time to time if only to emphasize that I'm from the south.

As for the sweetheart search relating to Bob, I imagine he would have approved of it, but I don't think he pressured Chris into doing it. In Chris's mind, woman = happiness, so he just put those two together, but I think Bob would have liked to see him get married and live like a "normal" person. Still, as Bgheff said, that was all Chris. I don't know if Bob even had any involvement or awareness of it.

It's a southern thing, yes. I use it to refer to friends, but quite a few people use it to refer to their lovers.

Still doesn't explain the "from the ground up" part.

Bob's idea or not they were probably glad to have a few hours away from Chris. It doesn't seem like they ever discouraged his methods or told him "No. That's dumb". I mean if you had a mentally handicapped son who said he was going to go sit in public with a sign and wait for a pretty girl to approach him wouldn't you try to get him to stop because of the ridicule he would get from people? Nevermind that Chris had several incidents with the jerkops and Borb still let him go loiter in places of business for hours.

I think it's because of his approach to dating, it's all about him, so he'll change his sweetheart to suit his needs.

Yes, I can't figure why Chris feeled the need to add "from the ground up".
Anyway, I think the urge to start a Love Quest was Chris's idea.
And if there's someone who pushed Chris in this way, it's Wes Iseli.

I've usually heard "sweetheart" used as a term of endearment that an older woman would use for a younger relative. My Grandmom would call me that, but never a girlfriend.

Colloquial use of "sweetheart" - as depicted in Southern hospitality - did not seem at all common, when I was housed in and around coastal and inland Virginia for a few years. Every time I heard it, it was from servicepeople who were from further South (mostly kids from Brazos County, TX). I suspect - like myself - it's something Chris picked up watching older TV programs or from his parents. I learned English watching a lot of classic TV and PBS programming, and it reflects heavily in my own (sometimes questionable) use. I get shit for occasionally saying something good is "swell."

Edit - Bob has history in Alabama, where I hear colloquial use of "sweetheart" somewhat regularly. I don't hear it as often in Texas, but I've only been to the Southernmost cities of Texas - never Dallas / Ft. Worth area. Seems reasonable Chris also heard it a lot from him.

Barb sounds like Virginia moonshine running trash, through and through. If she uses "sweetheart" much, it's probably only because she picked it up from someone or somewhere else.

"Sweetheart Search" also makes it sound cute and innocent, versus Fuck Quest. Chris was probably playing up the Southern Gentlemen meets Adorable and Brave Autistic card.

If Barb told Chris his attempts made him look retarded, and she did, I can only imagine what Bob said to him.

So far for me, nobody uses the word "sweetheart" quite much anymore.

I use it all the time. I don't care if it's a guy or a girl I'll call them a sweetheart, babe, or a doll. But it's more sarcasm on my end.

What about "heartsweet" :P
Heartsweet is best sweet.

As for Sweetheart Search, I think it's wholly possible that CWC heard the term (possibly from Bob) and simply decided he liked the sound of it. The level of effort put into his Love Quest is pretty impressive by Chris standards (making it one of my favorite eras) and would suggest that it was primarily his idea and creation. The numerous phases of the Attraction Sign, business/yu-gi-oh cards, pamphlets and random ass derived marketing methods show a dedication too deep to have come from anywhere but the mind of CWC himself.

PS: (And to all MEN with girlfriends, except marrieds and blacks, go jump off a cliff)
Have a nice day
