It's fun to read about the brewing inner fandom war between the asian side of genshin and the americans that are usually starting this crap. I have no idea if it's going to erupt soon, but it seems like the asian side is getting tired of americans running their artists off twitter for stupid stuff.
genshindrama.PNG

Here's an entire twitter thread of non-americans shitting on the americans in the fandom, quite an entertaining read. Apparently there was controversy over the game using the term "Sworn Brother" with a bunch of people assuming that meant they were literal brothers and would harass anyone that shipped them as shipping incest. Person decides to ask an American excluding group of genshin players what sworn brothers meant and basically everyone there understood the actual meaning, they then come to the conclusion that it's the ignorant Americans that are starting a lot of the drama. Thread itself is super image heavy, but most of it is just them posting intro posts from people joining their genshin groups writing "what they hate the most about USA Centrism in the community" which might be entertaining to read through for some people.

That's just stupid. Of course "sworn brother" doesn't mean they're actual brothers. Maybe it's just a poor translation but it makes perfect sense to me.

Magibon will always be the best weeb. Single handedly conned millions of simps with angle shots and keeping her mouth shut...while becoming famous for waving to the webcam. I will never forget the day THE TEEFS were revealed. Her videos contain the best practical effects I've ever seen to turn a 2 into a 10.

I remember the weebs going absolutely crazy over her. All the bitch did was sit there, smile and wave at the camera and she gained like millions of followers. But she actually got some street cred in Japan by appearing in magazines, TV shows and even doing voice over work in movies so... good for her?

They ruin everything they touch. I mean I get liking something to the point where you want to get merch of it. You want to own the media. You want to get the posters and the wall scrolls and signed doodles by the artist. But when it comes to things like sending threats to the creators that they better start shipping this guy with this guy or else they'll kill themselves it stops being an innocent fandom and turns into something psychotic.

Exactly, them motherfuckers were doing that to BnH/MHA. It would be hilarious if someone did the standard Japanese AV Uggo rape one of the Genshin fem boys and posted it everywhere.

Out of curiosity, why the fuck do these people care so much about this game? This *is* a mobile game where you burn money to open lootboxes that let you burn more money to open more lootboxes, with the cycle repeating indefinitely right? Like this isn't actually something worth getting in slap fights on twitter over is it? Why not just put it down if you don't like something about it? Wouldn't that be better for your wallet in the long run anyway? Idk, maybe I just don't understand games like this because I prefer games that don't just play themselves in the background. Am I just out of the loop with this, or is the general online anime fan discourse significantly more autistic than the fan discourse I see for the things I care about?

I've played some of it to try seeing what the appeal is and I'd say it's strongest point is being a good wandering around to find random stuff to do kind of game. It's sort of similar to playing an rpg where instead of going through the main quests line you just go off where ever looks interesting or just chill running side quests. Overall it isn't bad to play as a super casual game, doesn't really feel like a gacha in my opinion.

As for the appeal, it's the same thing with a lot of popular gachas where the popularity is largely character driven and a large amount of fan content surrounds that. You'll notice that a lot of this drama has nothing to do with the game itself, but with people drawing fanart of the characters or shipping, not anything involving gameplay/meta/raids. Some game fandoms are a lot more relaxed than others, especially those that have been around for a while or are full of veteran gacha players. Genshin is this weird hybrid that managed to also find popularity among those that aren't use to gacha or the kind of fandom that's typical for them. Other games also have drama, but it just that Genshin is the new hotness at the moment with a wider player base than typical gacha due to how it plays (and people originally marketing it as a F2P BoTW) so it's a lot more vocal.

Am I just out of the loop with this, or is the general online anime fan discourse significantly more autistic than the fan discourse I see for the things I care about?
It's more a thing with online gacha game fan discourse since literally every game has its own drama and it's very common for a person to play multiple gacha or jump ship to the new hotness when they get bored of an old game (or it goes to shit). Definitely more common to hear about in games that have global releases or at least ENG options, but gacha drama still happens in JP/CN/KR/SEA releases too just less likely to make their way into the ENG community (unless someone translates the drama or it's something big).

I'm genuinely surprised that, despite everything the Genshin fandom seems to do, they still haven't got their own community watch thread yet.

Japan is like 20 years behind when it comes to these things. Things tend to move at a glacial pace over there which is odd considering how fast people tend to live their lives. But SJW ideas are just now starting to take hold but they're very small and practically ignored by most.

We're talking a country where the book "Lil Black Sambo" was still considered a beloved children's tale up until a few years ago. The concept of racism runs deep and it's interwoven into Japanese society but it's largely ignored as being unimportant.

When I said the fujo and fudan, I didn’t mean specifically only Asians. It applied to all of them.

It's not that simple.

Racism is a massively contentious issue in Japan, but it's mostly all about relations with the Koreas and China. The right tends to use pretty harsh language against Korean and Chinese people, while the left is a lot more lenient, though even the Communist Party doesn't actually support the CCP in Japan. Most immigrants are from these countries, and issues like North Korean schools are controversial. Black people are rare and just don't come up very often except for Nigerian bouncers in cities.

Additionally, politicians there are older than the average citizen and have more socially conservative views. PM Suga is 72, which is partly why the government is opposed to, say, gay marriage, which actually carries support of up to 2/3 of the population in polls. I'd compare it to the US federal government refusing to legalise weed against public opinion, because old senators in their 70s grew up when it was the devil's lettuce.

Bear in mind I'm talking about average people here. Fandom crap has no bearing on them and they think "shipping" is when you put goods on a boat.

The only way this loser has a point at all is that so many Japanese cartoons depict white people with no noses. The only "anime" art style I can stomach is the old gekiga one where the cartoons actually look vaguely Japanese.

Chinese cartoons are just as bad. I've been unfortunate enough to see some art from those in video game advertisements and it's rare to see anyone who looks like she is from anywhere much south of Finland. They never forgot the 1930s cooperation with Germany I guess.

It's all a balancing act. I don't want to see black people in 15th century Bohemia, but I don't want an Ancient China full of pasty white Scandinavians either.
