Whiteness was, and still is to a point, seen as being ideal in Japan. Women wear makeup and take beauty products to lighten their skin. The geisha of old wore white makeup and still do. This has literally been a thing since the Heian period which started back in the late 8th century. Mrs. Sebben used to be praised by her friends and co-workers for being so pale skinned and they wanted to know her secret in being so. Poor thing burns very easily and means she needs to cover up during the summer.
Also the Japanese tend to have small noses. You can see this in manga and animu when they have a gaijin there as often times they're depicted as having larger noses to the point of sometimes being comical.
Demon Slayer ended up being more popular than Wonder Woman and they had to use a 1984 Reference to show us why Donald Trump is Big Brother, or something.
It is not surprising that it was more popular, the advertising and marketing for demon slayer is more effective and the fan base is larger.

It isn't as much whiteness as much as it is discrimination based on skin color, China has something similar, in fact the Japanese probably took it from China, in the Heian period they were very much influenced by Chinese culture and sought to emulate them.
It doesn't have anything to do with race and them trying to be like whites but with social class since Yurop had something similar and it worked on the same principle. If you are dark-skinned then you're some peasant who has to spend too much time in the sun just to survive, if you're light-skinned then you're high class or nobility since you didn't have to spend a lot of time toiling outdoors. That's why in Yurop you had the concept of being "blue-blooded", if you're pale then you can see the blue color of your veins on your arms, since the nobility didn't spend much time outdoors toiling in the fields or wherever else, they were pale and you could see the blue veins on them easily.
