I enjoyed the female characters in Mad Men. Joan was sexy, powerful, and good at her job. There were many facets to Peggy who started off weak and learned how to be powerful, Betty Draper was so much darker on the inside than she let on, and even Don's daughter was interesting as she grew to hate her father's womanizing ways.

The men are also well written. Maybe I'm just biased because I love this show so much.
I really liked that show until I talked with some men about it, their take away was "wow things were great back then". I know why George Orwell beat you in the head with his point so much in his fiction writing, his journalism made him privy to how stupid most people are when it comes to interpreting the message of a story. You can aim to expose something that is wrong, and end up normalizing it.

I think this page is a pretty fair assessment in the flaws in a lot of female characters, including a lot of the so called "strong and empowered" female characters.

https://springhole.net/writing/female-character-issues.htm

I can't tell you how sick I am of seeing borderline sociopathic women who act horrible to anyone with a Y chromosome (and even some other women) and get praised for being "strong and empowered" so it's good to see someone call it out.

Alita and several others of battle angel Alita/gunnm

Ripley - alien franchise

Nancy- nightmare on elm street franchise.

Carter and Shaw- person of interest

Jessica, several bene gesserit characters from the last two books- Dune series

Psycho pass anime has several

Nina from the Monster series

There are loads of strong female characters even in 80s early 90s rom coms.
Many of these films have ended up overlooked and forgotten in the current year.

Anime and manga has always had a good showing of strong women characters even in series with male leads.

Linda Danvers from Peter Allan David run on supergirl.
What makes Linda such a good character is that she is flawed. She makes mistakes, fuck up and be pretty selfish. At times, she breaks down and can't handle the situation. But in the end, she still do the right thing, even when she know it will hurt her. She has a troubled past where she did evil things, and it haunt her throught out the whole comic. She is also a fun, strong and takes shit form no one. Overall, she is a well rounded character. I just wished that DC acknowledge that she exist.

It's a manga from nippon land of cartoon porn and weebs but the female characters of claymore are great. A few men are able to write good female characters.

Simply put, a well written female character isn't different from the women in her setting. She's not a freedom fighter, an outspoken civil rights champion, a strangely masculine heroine. She exists in her setting and makes decisions that are context-sensitive. The worst written female characters are those that the story is written around and have dialogue/actions that should be impossible or cause great offence to other characters. That goes for men, too.

If your story is set in a world where men are in chains and women produce asexually, make your female characters as dominant and powerful as you please. Otherwise it's important to consider the power structures of the world your women live in.

Stella Gibson in The Fall was good until the third season when shit went off the rails and she started talking about the patriarchy. Like bitch you're the police, you are the patriarchy.
I stopped watching that series less than two episodes in when the premise became obvious.

Serial killer is a crazy Jew hell bent on murdering strong, empowered sexually promiscuous Irish women.
Nope no political angle there.
Yeah whatever.

Also, was disgusted by Gillian Anderson openly hitting on some random cop at a fucking crime scene of all things.
It just came across as creepy, inappropriate for the setting and very much like sexual harassment.
If the character had been a man a not a STRONG WOMAN the optics would be awful.

A show about a guy killing and mutilating women, and you're offended by some intentionally distasteful flirting? Maybe if you'd watched the show you'd have realised that both Gibson and Spekter are severely sexually dysfunctional due to their upbringing, hence their behaviour.

Since, this wasn’t real life or a docu drama I’m allowed to be irritated by ham fistedness and lack of finesse in my entertainment, thank you very much.

I found the main characters boring. And I think 2 hours is enough time to sell me on the premise.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand The fall. The drama is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of criminal psychology most of the plot will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Spekter's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Kushatnik Zhen literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the plot, to realise that it's not just a thrilling twist on the detective show genre- it says something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike the Fall truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the significance in Gibson's existential giving of blowjobs to married police inspectors, which itself is a cryptic reference to Malory's arthurian epic Le Mort d'Arthur. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Allan Cubitt's genius spurts out of their televisions in thick, viscous streams of tension and suspense. What fools.. how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Bigfoot Charlie tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid

I'm curious what your opinion is of Twin Peaks?

Lol!

I’ve actually never watched Twin Peaks outside a few snippets here and there. I was too young at the time to get sucked into it.
I’m aware of its impact on pop culture and all that.

I am familiar with Lynch’s work though outside of it. Talk about disturbing and distasteful sexuality and what not.

Lynch’s stuff is like a slow car wreck, IMO.

Now you've ruined my life because I fear Hollywood is gonna remake Space Cop with Melissa McCarthy in the Rich "Rich Evans" Evans role.

Honestly, as much as this sounds autistic as all Hell itself, Undyne from Undertale.

Undyne is probably the most badass character in the game, basically able to suplex boulders because she can and more. And she straight up beats your ass on the Genocide Run, on the Pacifist Run you actually get to learn a bit more about her character like how she was trained by Asgore in order to become strong enough to beat him.
