In all my years of following Chris, there's one stupid basic question I've never bothered to ask. What's with Christian Weston Chandler? Why is his mother's maiden name his middle name?

It can't be a feminist thing - at least, that's not the impression I had of Borb. Is this some kind of really common Southern thing that I just don't know about? I live in the Midwest United States and I've never met anyone with their mother's maiden name as their middle name.

Well, In some cultures and traditions people often have their mothers name as their middle name. I know my dad has the same thing.

Okay, that's about what I thought. We all know Chris wasn't planned - maybe Bob and Barb were literally just too lazy to think him up a TRUE and ORIGINAL middle name.

Yeah, I've known several people that had their mom's maiden name as their middle name. Not that big a deal.

I was thinking today about where that originated, and then it hit me - Pokemon Crystal was the first pokemon game where you could play as a girl. Of course! It's so obvious! Chris wants to name his daughter Crystal because he liked playing Pokemon Crystal. Am I right, or am I right?

Crystal... A name which sounds similar to my own, and which is named after the illustrious metal which is mined out of the Earth's ground.

My Mother's maiden name is my middle name too. It was done to keep the name "alive" since my maternal Grandparents only had daughters and no sons.

I really think its a sad and useless way to try to say the mother's lineage is important, but not important enough to think about for more than one generation. It really wouldn't have a point unless Christian's last name was Weston-Chandler, or even better Chandler-Weston. Unfortunately, women from that time period have been taught for so long they are second class citizens that I wouldn't be surprised if she was those type of women that make me want to vomit and punch them by calling herself "Mrs. Bob Chandler".

However, this is coming from a woman way ahead of her time that kept her last name when she got married and my son's last name is hyphenated His last name-MY last name. To me, the whole having Weston as his middle name is just a pathetic useless attempt. Not trying to sound A-Loggy, I am a feminist waaay ahead of her time that just sees it as pointless and sad. Now, Christian's view of women's rights is starting to become clearer...

I wonder what would happen if he somehow ends up impregnating a poor woman and if it ends up a girl, she absolutely refuses to name the baby Crystal. I bet it would bring Chris a lot of stress.

I always thought Weston was one of his last names... You see in Spanish people have First Name, Second Name, First LastName, Second Lastname. but some people only have First Name, First Lastname, Second Lastname. I thought somehow some people in the States had this last model too.
But I guess I was wrong.

Well, I don't know how much importance "lineage" really has to anyone these days, whether male-based or female-based. I got my last name from my father's side, as is obviously the old style, but the only things I know about my great grandparents - on both sides - are their names and what country they come from, and I don't know a damn thing about any generations before that; nearly everybody I know is just as in the dark about their lineage and they couldn't care less.

I've got some friends that kept their last names when they married, but their children's last names are hyphenated him-her. I wonder what will happen if one of those children marries another hypenated person and they have a kid -- him(dad)-her(dad)--him(mom)-her(mom)?

It follows that you could figure out how many generations back their ancestors started hyphenating by taking the log base 2 of the number of hyphens. But then I'm a geek.

To me, the whole having Weston as his middle name is just a pathetic useless attempt. Not trying to sound A-Loggy, I am a feminist waaay ahead of her time that just sees it as pointless and sad. Now, Christian's view of women's rights is starting to become clearer...

There's quite a tradition in the British peerage of preserving the female line's surname in the middle names of the children. It was/is more often done if the female half of the equation comes from a distinguished family. I was thinking this was true of Lady Diana Frances Spencer, but Frances was the middle name of her mother the Vicountess Althorp (though it came down to her from the family's last name. I think). CWC's affectation for rubbing "Weston" in everyone's face probably has something to do with that bogus Mayflower / Ann Boleyn story he's so proud of. If he were to admit that "the source of my name is the probably apocryphal Daniel Weston, who did not come over on the Mayflower and was not a descendant of Ann Boleyn" he'd probably crow about it a bit less.
