What albums that you do like that critics and fans hate? -

We all have our personal favorites and our personal quirks. The things we cherish and adore can sometimes be the same things others will despise with a passion. It's no different in the world of music, especially pop and rock music, so it's inevitable that we will like and even love albums that the rest of the world don't like. So this thread is dedicated to music albums that we all like, love and hold a soft spot for, even if the majority of critics and music fans reviled and disliked them immensely to this day.

Prince - Around the World in a Day

Around the World in a Day by Prince is fantastic. People who complain about it just wanted Purple Rain part 2. Paisley Park is a fave of mine and after the purple one passed on it was that song that gave me feels.

I've grown to like Load and Reload by Metallica more the older I get. Nice, solid hard rock albums.

I really love all of NIN's output from the past 10 years. I see fans bitching so much about these albums, but I realized why Trent's my faveorite musician and it's because he grows and doesn't just do the same thing over and over. "Add Violence" is maybe my fave.

Never Let Me Down by David Bowie gets shit on a lot but it's a great listen that you can put on from start to finish. Haven't heard the "remake" from 2018, but I should get around to that today.

I listened to Chinese Democracy a lot when it came out but never since.

I was going to say Untouchables by Korn but Wikipedia says it received positive reviews. Actually when I check Wikipedia most albums mentioned so far apparently had "generally positive" reviews. Perhaps what we're looking for is more so albums that didn't meet fan expectations?

Wikipedia says a lot of critics hated Kid A but I think most fans turned around on it pretty quick?

The Columbine fangirl that killed herself a few years back had Stand Inside Your Love on her Geocities imitation webpage and I didn't realise how catchy it was. That made me go back and listen to Machina/The Machines of God.

I thought everyone loved NIN's output from ~2010 onwards? Basically since he got married and won an Oscar he's been on a roll. It's With Teeth, Year Zero and The Slip that people mostly dislike. It's funny on Spotify seeing The Hand that Feeds being super popular because it was in PS2 racing games but nobody knows Starfuckers anymore because it was too explicit for zoomer childhoods.

The song he released with HEALTH a few weeks ago sounds a lot like classic 90's NIN.

Generation Swine from Motley Crue. The hardcores love it for being different and it shows the band could do other things than hard rock. The problem that other fans have with it is it doesn’t sound like the rest of their albums outside the self titled album with John Corabi on vocals which is also another great album. Swine was not supposed to have Vince Neil on vocals but was forced by the record company so it’s a mishmash of an album.

Limp Bizkit - The Unquestionable Truth Vol. 1

Fans and critics do like this, though. Specially snobby critics, saying it's the only album where Fred isn't acting like a fratboy and let's the band show their musical chops.
The worst received album by Flacid Dick is Results May Vary.

I was going to say Untouchables by Korn but Wikipedia says it received positive reviews.

Untouchables has too many Live-favorite songs (Alone I Break, Thoughtless, Here To Stay) to be their worst material. It's probably their last good album while in the mainstream.

Just going by what little social media/comment section stuff I see where every top post is something bitching about Atticus Ross, his hollywood career taking away time to focus on NIN, ect ect. Didn't know about the Health song until this post, good shit.

Does irony liking something count, because Metallica/Lou Reed's Lulu is always a joy to share with somoene unfamiliar.

My favorite Metallica album is Lulu just because I am more of a fan of Lou Reed and I am kind of amused on the idea of teenaged Metallica confused stumbling on a aged Lou Reed with no prior experience.

 

[Autumnal Equinox]

Roots to Branches by Jethro Tull got middling reviews when it first came out. It’s in my top five favorite Tull albums.

Same deal with Monster by REM. People were expecting another Automatic For the People but Monster is more of a throwback to their earlier sound like Murmer. I love the album

Danzig 5: Blackacidevil. Danzig rushed into the industrial metal sound hard to his detriment and whatever he used to record his vocals should have been thrown into a blast furnace. But honestly, if he left Hand of Doom and Ashes alone, put the acoustic version of Come To Silver (thank you Lost Tracks of Danzig showing how much better it sounds as an acoustic song) and just recorded the other tracks in the style of his first four albums, it would've been much better. But regardless of my hopeful wish, I still appreciate the album and can look past the odd industrial style as the structure & lyrics are still Danzig in his prime.

I liked Theatre of Tragedy's Musique. It got savaged by critics and fans alike, mostly because the band went from being very posh, Shakespearean symphonic-doom metal, to technology-obsessed industrial-electropop. It's corny, yeah, but it had some groovy tracks - Commute was actually one of my favorite ToT songs, and I probably listened to the album more than Assembly even, which is universally considered to be the "better" of ToT's two godawful electropop albums.

I also really liked GWAR's Carnival of Chaos. GWAR basically never plays any songs from that album live - except sometimes Penguin Attack - and nowadays it's the forgotten book of GWAR. I actually don't know if Carnival of Chaos got bad reviews or not, but it's definitely underappreciated to a criminal degree.

I think one of the issues might have been that it's one of GWAR's most experimental albums, and it's got a bunch of songs that are hard to fit in with all the rest of the stuff they do. Songs like

... which makes me wish Balsac and Slymenstra would do a jazz album together, and also my all-time favorite GWAR tune

Also liked early Pantera. The stuff you're never supposed to talk about.

Yeah, Load was OK. It wasn't great by Metallica standards (or at least, Metallica standards of the time), but it would have stood on its own as an alt-rock album by some other band, I think. I also liked Load better than Justice, which I know this a controversial take, but there it is.

Don't know if it's widely hated, but people more or less just don't give a shit about the Steve Miller Band album Italian X Rays. I think it's home to a few cool tracks.
