What are some nice online communities out there? - Or communities that you miss and that are gone now?

So there's plenty of communties that get a lot of flack here, surely without a degree of self irony.

But what are some nice communities?


Personally I like places with tall roofs, snarky but friendly people who come from a broad variety of walks in life.
Or just places full of the bizarre and interesting, unusual, underground, etc!
Do you know some great quasi private mil-forums?
Do you happen to have a perfect place for torrent discussions and invites?
What about a spot with great gossip if you're into that. (Let's face it, that's what kiwifarms is).

Has a lot of insider news and a lot of devs that make CRPGs are said to be lurkers.
The cynisism is almost as strong as the sarcasm here but mostly it's just a bunch of passionate people discussing what they love.

I used to be in more music oriented communities, either it being the discussion of someone's work or sharing your own. I still really enjoy musical discussion, but I just don't seek out the sites to do so anymore.

This place is cool, though. I enjoy the stories about people/things going on in other communities, along with the general discussion that can be had.

Well most places I've left is mostly because of a lack of time or interest in participating or because they've closed down. In fact I can't remember a community I was a member of that turned into a shithole. Now I don't count aggregate sites like Reddit, Twitter or other social network sites. Those are all evidently a failure of model judging by their general slide into degeneracy coupled with censorship and infantile nonsense. But it's a new model. They'll figure something better out in the future.

Maybe some of us are more lucky than others!



edit: Oh wait I know one, Guardian comments. But that's mostly because of rampant censorship rather than the community. It had the best quips and pieces of salty british humour anywhere this side of the net.

I lul at their "support independent journalism" nonsense that they plaster all over their website nowdays.

I used to post and contribute quite often to retrojunk.com Back in the early to mid 2000s it was a great place to reminisce and talk about nostalgic things. It's still around, but it's a complete ghost town, all the old faces have moved on, and the only people now there are Doug Walker dickriders. In it's heyday though, it was a great community.

They're all terrible. The Internet is where nice things go to be brutally raped and murdered. There are forums/communities supposedly devoted to helping and caring that are just utter fucking viper pits. It's like you take a group of nice people who get along and the moment you put them on the Internet they suddenly realize they all hate each other and want each other to die in car fires. That magical realization of "Hey, they can't punch me through the computer screen" is what does it, I think.
