What are the best characters designs you’ve ever seen? -

SMT in general could soak up this whole thread. Kaneko just nailed his whole design philosophy in his approach.

As a Dragon Ball mark, I'm obligated to shill "loose gi goku" whenever I can.
I could espouse some nonsense about how the orange gi looks bad on him, but nah, it's iconic.
Rather, I think the loose, dark blue gi, white obi, and ochre/yellow pants signify that he's come a long way, from being a student of various masters and gods, into coming into his own path for self improvement. At least in EoZ/GT, he took on a student, so he's confident enough in his own abilities to teach someone else. For someone like Goku, that's a massive character development... to only be undone in Super.

Not gonna say GT is any better, because it has its own bucket of problems, but I do think it's got the best designs and conceptual development of the characters.

This and SSJ4 in general are good looks.

I have not one shred of regret in my entire life.

Hot take: SSJ4 Goku is still his best looking transformation since SSJ. Ultra Instinct is cool, but SSJ4 really broke the mold with SSJ transformations.
Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Super Saiyan Blue) are the most lazy, uninspired designs (and names) I have seen in Dragon Ball. I always found the idea of a transformation radically changing your physical appearance as it ramps up to be much cooler than "ooh look blue hair" or "ooh look red hair and red eyes".

I agree with SSJ Blue, but at least SSJG had Goku and Vegeta look younger. Also, I do like the fiery-red aura. At least it's more visually distinct than SSJ Blue (SSJ4 still looks better than either God forms).

Not so hot take: SSJG should have been called Saiyan God, and SSJ Blue should have been SSJG. Also, SSJ Blue should have, at least, kept the skinnier/younger appearance that SSJG used. Also, a blue-fiery aura would have been nice.

Vegeta also looks great in SSJG. It's like it was made for him.

90s marvel cartoons nuff said.

But yeah we laugh at marvel now, but back then the designs on the fox animated series were so popular they influenced the actual comics for a good chunk of the decade

The breath of Fire games all had pretty cool looking character designs:

I mean this for all of the games. You have a wide range of sizes and races, with each character having a distinct backstory which their design helps to tell. They're not overdesigned either and look like outfits people could actually wear.

I can agree with the Blue forms, but SSG made them skinnier for a reason. It was SUPPOSED to invoke the "ultimate power doesnt equal muscles" which Z Broly and some parts of Z overall had unfortunately drilled into the head of a lot of the fans... and then Toei had Toriyama design Blue.

By this point, Toriyama was just absolutely sick of it, and with good reason. He's stayed hands off of the anime and the manga, only providing outlines but Toei always wants more and like it or not, Dragon Ball brings in the big bucks. So, right back to big muscles, yelling, lots of punches and sideways action cuts. You can say this shit all day to any one, but anyone that disagrees will inevitably go "WELL, THE FANDOM AGREES THAT--" god shut the fuck up. Just shut the fuck up.

Anyway
Ryu Hayabusa in his "Legendary Black Falcon" outfit. Amongst a sea of "modern ninja" outfits that go too far into the cyberized department, Hayabusa stays classy in his sleek jumpsuit.

I think he's allergic to sleeves. He hasn't had them since DoA 3.

A good design is one that can tell a story without saying a word.
This person's boomer parent probably hasn't touched a video game in their life yet could figure out the type of characters from looking at them.

Akihiko Yoshida is one of my favorite character designers. He's like a reverse Tetsuya Nomura, he can create flashy designs without looking too ridiculous and he doesn't need to add belts.
