Whether in your home country or abroad, what are some of the places you've visited that you liked the most?

I'm not very well-traveled, but I have a few:

Chicago: I have family that lives in the Chicago area and I've been visiting there since I was a little kid. I just think it's a really cool city with a lot of fun things to do. I like how it's more laid-back culture-wise than bigger cities like NYC or Los Angeles. I also love visiting Lake Michigan.

Hawaii: I went here as a kid and absolutely loved it. It's just beautiful there. I still remember going whale watching and seeing humpback whales breaching.

Italy: I went to Italy with my family years ago, specifically to Rome, the Vatican, Assisi, and Florence. I really love Italy, from the food to the environment to the history. We also had a great tour guide in Rome who got us into a lot of places. It was so cool seeing ancient structures like the Colosseum and ancient temples that were converted into churches centuries ago.

Cabo San Lucas: Also went there on a family trip a few years ago and really loved it. The weather and the beaches are just gorgeous. So is the ocean; we went out on a boat and saw lot of sea lions, giant rays, and other sea life.

Mallaig - It's a gorgeous little place you can only get to by ferry ride. Barely any buildings there except for a mini farm, tourist gift shop, pub, church and a couple of houses.
If you want to go your grocery shopping you need to use the ferry ride to and from mainland. It's so remote, it's beautiful.

Kuala Lumpur. it has a peculiar cyber-punk feel to it. While it's reputed to put tourists at risk, if you're casual and do not have the veneer of patronizing tolerance, the locals treat you decently and you get to find places much more interesting than the Petronas Towers. Language barriers are eroded by gestures & common sense. The Malaysians are pretty quick on their feet and have a gentle no-bullshit attitude.

I'm not very well-traveled because my hometown is pretty nice and everywhere else is a shithole in comparison but Savannah, Georgia was amazing. Only time I've been out of state and it was the other end of the nation so it is a very different world than where I live. There's lots of beautiful old buildings that all seem to have some degree of sordid history and hauntings. I got to go on a walking tour of the city where the lady told us all about the beautiful historic buildings and how at midnight you can still hear echoes of slaves crying in the basement and the cemetary haunted by the morbidly obese teenager who would kill the pets of his bullies. And then there was that sidewalk that got dug up so electrical wiring could get put in and they unearthed hundreds of human bones buried in front of the house.
And the food was all so gooooooood. Best motherfucking ribs I've ever eaten were on Tybee Island. Only downside of the whole trip is that I was there with my Girl Scout troop and so everything fun was punctuated with whining and histronics.

I'm pretty fond of São Paulo. Chill vibes, amazing food, a thriving music and skateboarding scene, and loads of Art Deco architecture did the trick for me. The neighbourhood I stayed at had an ice hockey team, which was pretty awesome too. Plus, the motorways towards the Brazilian southeast are lined with forests made of a shade of green I haven't seen anywhere else in the world.

Sheffield England of all places.

Have a friend who moved to Missoula Montana a few years back. Went to visit him and I can see why he made the choice to move there. Absolutely peaceful and great if you enjoy hiking.

Minneapolis/St Paul. Great record stores, cool neighborhoods, and over 3 days I spent a total of 15 dollars on transportation because everywhere I wanted to visit was on a light rail or bus line.

Honestly considering moving there in the somewhat distant future if I can afford it.

Montreal. Great food and vibes. Like an affordable NYC that's less distastefully gentrified and corporate.

Rome. because the glory of the roman empire is forever.

Miami. Did so much self pampering and relaxing here I think the therapeutic effect lasted for months after I left.

Yellowstone National Park. I've been there about seven or eight times in my life and I think it's the most beautiful place in the world. I've always felt like I've got a connection to Yellowstone, and every time I visit it feels like I've come home.

Runners up would be Disney World and Disneyland. I really hope I can take my boys to Disney World in a couple of years. I'd like to check out the Universal Studios Orlando parks while there, too. I really enjoy parks that go to extreme lengths with their theming and immersion.

'Straya. I got to pet a koala.

Italy. Lots of stuff for history nerds, and day drinking is both accepted and encouraged.

Peru was pretty cool.

Domestically, I really liked Alaska, and I love DC. I seriously might move to the DC area once I wrap up my PhD in a couple of years.

I really loved rural Manitoba & Canmore, Alberta. Usually I kind of hate going anywhere outside my province, but I guess it's generally because I've been visiting places like Toronto, Miami and New York City. I think I just fucking hate big cities man. I hate how the tap water tastes like ass. I hate the smell of the air. I hate not being able to piss outside. I hate the hordes of people and not being able to feel isolated. I hate not seeing rabbits and moose and bears and shit. I hate having to pretend I give a shit about middle eastern food.

Cologne Cathedral. As an Amerifag and a history buff, it really was something amazing to touch the outside of the cathedral doors. I got to hear mass there and I visited the musem nearby with all that wonderful ancient Roman stuff. Seeing real Roman coins outside of a history book was absolutely magical!

pfft at my favorite place (random fuckin hills in the north of england) I accidentally took a piss on some 6000-3000 year old neolithic rock art.

My previous favorite place in the lake district, is becoming more and more overrun with tourists so I prefer the Cheviots now. Not quite as pretty but it's real nice when the heather is in bloom and you're hardly ever within line of site of another disgusting human.
