Decided to post a thread discussing exactly what creates special snowflakes. I've been curious about this phenomena for a while, and why these people almost always come from the US or Canada?
I personally believe it has to do with several factors: a weak sense of national unity, a method to communicate rapidly and cheaply, and excessive sheltering of children.
The first is pretty self-explanitory. In the US, 30% of the country believes it's timed for an armed rebellion, and most tend to identify politically or economically before identifying nationally. Canada, due to it's economic similarity, geographic location, and close political relationship with the US tends to create similar feelings amongst many Canadians. This obviously creates a society in which being an unique individual is harder. Some feel that they will 'get lost' within such a society, and feel the need to be even more unique. The reason why this has occurred only recently is because of the next reason.
Communication that was cheap and efficient has always been a bane to the human race. With the advent of affordable cellular communication and internet, it's made life much easier. However, it has revealed aspects of society best reserved for the backs of basements and the depths of forests. Seeing this, people viewed as obscure can find some comfort in the privacy and anonymity of the internet with like-minded people. However, seeing how there are already thousands of people like them, being a whatever isn't enough for them, and they must go farther. But finding thousands like them isn't something the would bring a normal person down, which brings up the final factor.
The excessive sheltering of children and ignorance of parents is the final factor in making a special snowflake. When kids are told they're special throughout their early life, most tend to shake it off when they come of age as a way to keep them from having a tantrum. Some however, really take it to heart, and literally flip out when they realize that they really aren't super duper special like everyone said they were. So they feel the need to prove that they are special.
