In the US specifically

• Transgender movement. It’s pretty much made it so people are transitioning when they really shouldn’t, not to mention the possible child abuse coming from this as well.
• #MeToo. I blame the media for this. It has pretty much made it so people can make baseless accusations and has created a modern-day witch hunt.
• Fat acceptance. This encourages unhealthy behavior and makes it so people feel less responsibile for their weight gain.

• Islam apologism. This has made it difficult to have honest discussions about the religion itself and the impact it has.

All of this was "objective and verifiable" fact at one time, since pretty much all media marched to the same drum with issues like this and a thousand more. Media narratives have always been the perfect illusion to enforce on people in order to make them believe that the most pointless, spiteful, authoritarian, sadistic shit is not only "necessary" but infact a glorious and noble thing.

The modern "corporate woke" shit? Aint nothing new. Using the "SUPER IMPORTANT CAUSE" of the day to prop up sub-par products and try to make them taboo to criticise has always been around, and doesnt even begin to compare to the literal genocides, organised mass rapes, systematic tortures, and sustained dictatorships that have been propped up and made immune from reproach solely by the right people greasing the right media wheels in order to either bury the story or to justify the atrocities by spinning the victims as inhuman monsters who are being treated magnanimously and mercifully by those who torment them.

The 'wokeification' of media outlets. It's the unintentional collusion of mainstream media to only present news in a certain, approved way. If a story adheres to your worldview, blow it up and ensure that the narrative is placed front and centre, and refer back to it in future stories as reinforcement; if anything that's happening goes against this narrative, you sweep it under the rug or try and discredit its proponents (usually as bigots). To use an example from today, so much of the coverage of Andy Murray's retirement is about how he was a great feminist - at one point on the BBC website an article about all he did for women was in the top stories section, while everything about his tennis career was relegated to the sport section. The most important thing about him in the media eye is that he was a feminist, so this needs to be blown up to ensure that this narrative persists and hopefully filters through to the public. This is a pretty benign example, but it illustrates how the media use placement to push narratives.

It in itself isn't the most harmful, but it's played a role in so many lightning rod issues these days.

That's how I feel about most social movements. Most if not all of them initially started from a good place, but as the years and decades roll on, they become more and more manipulative and insane as they use shaming tactics, name calling, fearmongering, and other ugly methods to get their way, and a lot of them have gotten away from what the movement was originally about and has morphed into desperate attempts to stay relevant or excuses to pat themselves on the back for being perceived as caring and understanding people.

It is kind of like watching Citizen Kane play out but for an entire group entity rather than just an individual.

I don't know if its the worst, but modern day feminism is probably the most obvious example. Initially, yeah, women should have the right to vote and exist in the work place. But now here we are and they've pretty much achieved everything there is to achieve. But fuck that, its still not good enough so we have to make up the Wage Gap, inflated rape statistics, and the Patriarchy Boogeyman in an attempt to stay relevant and shame men into compliance. And they have basically created a social mindset that makes their sexism acceptable and they are able to make money out of their supposed victimhood. Its pretty gross to me. When I have people like Anita Sarkeesian telling me that I am more privileged than her and she gets to speak in front of the UN, I just lose my mind.

I'd argue that most activism is rooted in self-interest rather than good intentions. That's not to say everything being advocated for is bad because it's a selfish pursuit, but primarily it's people advocating for their own best interests, something I think has become more apparent as activists achieve basic goals (voting rights, working rights, etc.) and move onto more specialised topics. Case in point, quite often supposedly progressive people will suddenly turn reactionary when they are not the primary beneficiaries. Take for example the number of proud feminists who are fiercely resistant to troons invading their space, and the number of people complaining about how hurt feelings can destroy the mental wellbeing of PoC suddenly decide words can't hurt anyone when it's whitey on the receiving end.
