What's the deal with sovereign citizens? -

I've watched videos of them for a while now, most seem like crackheads who just don't want to get bothered by the cops while smoking crack but some go out their way to call cops on themselves to try to prove a point. Where do their ideas actually come from? What started this whole idea of you can avoid getting arrested by claiming to be a sovereign citizen and that you're "travelling" or whatever.

I guess most of them fall under First Amendment auditors but that seems a whole different set of ideas too that it basically says you can do what you want as long as you have a camera. I'm just curious where this all started and why they believe this stuff.

Basically you know how there are weird loopholes in some laws that let you work around said laws? Like making a "pistol brace" so your SBR is a pistol and not an SBR or Jews making fancy lightswitches that totally don't count as violating the sabbath? Sovereign citizens think they can apply this to basically any law they don't like but don't have any legal background and are also kind of crazy so it doesn't work out.

Famous example is "I wasn't driving I was traveling", an attempt to make a loophole around basically any motor vehicle laws by claiming what you're doing isn't actually driving a car.

At the core of the argument is that the Constitution of the United States was never properly ratified or some shit. So we're really living under the Articles of Confederation which did actually have weird rules like that.

Back in the real world: the Articles of Confederation were tossed in the trash after a rebellion that was a pain in the ass to suppress because of the dumb way the government and its laws were structured.

So basically they take the concept of "freedom of movement" and apply it to any situation? "You have no right to stop me speeding, make me pay for a license or obey state laws because the right to travel trumps everything"...More or less?

It's primarily coming from a misinterpretation of a cherry picked piece of Article IV:
The better to secure and perpetuate mutual friendship and intercourse among the people of the different states in this union, the free inhabitants of each of these states, paupers, vagabonds and fugitives from Justice excepted, shall be entitled to all privileges and immunities of free citizens in the several states
So they're basically trying to argue that they are not subject to the law as they are not citizens of the state but they are still protected by the law because they're "free inhabitants."

Funny enough, Article IV goes on to say:
and the people of each state shall have free ingress and regress to and from any other state, and shall enjoy therein all the privileges of trade and commerce, subject to the same duties, impositions and restrictions as the inhabitants thereof respectively
So even if we were under the Articles of Confederation, they wouldn't be able to pull that shit. Yet a lot of the famous videos still have these idiots citing Article IV as if it's a get out of jail free card.

They are ancaps who think they can get away with doing whatever they want because of a legal loophole which ignores the fact that the government doesn't give a shit about loopholes when it comes to violating people's rights.

I wouldn't say that sovereign citizens are all ancaps because they seem too different every time they are caught on video.
