IMO: It's not even the race-mixing bs so much as they chose stupid-looking people who can't act. Idris Elba stood in for white characters before and I don't think anyone cared, because he's lovable and can act. These fools cast here! This is some Star Trek Discovery level casting.

Back in June, we learned that Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike will take on the lead role of Moraine in Amazon’s upcoming adaptation of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. Per Amazon, here’s what viewers are in for:

The fantasy epic is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine believes that one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.

At first glance, Pike seems an odd choice, because she in no way matches the books’ physical description of Moraine. “She was barely tall enough to come up to his chest, but her presence was such that her height seemed the proper one, and he was felt ungainly in his tallness,” Jordan writes of Moraine in Eye of the World, as viewed from the perspective of protagonist Rand al’Thor. “The wide hood of her cloak framed her face and dark hair, hanging in soft ringlets.”

That doesn’t really match the blonde Pike, who’s 5’9”. Physically, she seems more fitted to play Leanne or Birgitte, characters introduced later in the series.

Should fans be worried at this disparity? In a word, no. At the end of the day, for this story, physical appearance is pretty much a non-factor. What matters is if the actors can channel the personalities of these beloved characters. Can Pike pull off Moraine’s quiet authority? Can she command respect with her aloof demeanor and drilling stare? Those are the kinds of things Pike has to bring to her performance to be a success in the role.

In the end, each performer will bring their own unique flavor to the characters. They should. It will be satisfying for fans if the actors can stay true to the written personalities while still finding a new angle.

For all his genius as a writer and storyteller, Jordan sometimes allowed his characters to grow stale — sometimes, it could be hard to tell if they were growing. Onscreen, in the flesh, these characters will be allowed to grow and mature. If all goes well, they will bring a richness that improves on what’s in the books.

In the end, it’s not worth getting caught up with the physical differences between the books and the show. Welcome them and enjoy the personalities and the story. If the showrunners and performers do their jobs, that will be enough. Now, let’s get this thing rolling!

It's one of the primary justifications used for diversity casting. "Finally a spaceship captain that little girls can look up to!", "Finally a superhero for black people!", etc. etc.

Even if I don't agree with the premise, it's absolutely unsurprising that some white fan have internalized this message, and are now looking at race-swapping established characters that previously resembled them through the representation lens. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I'm of the opinion that the way to combat retardation like that is to rise above it, because doing it on the flipside does nothing, and we would only be adding to the retardation that we were combating.

This is an age of endless distractions, from sports to movies to books to TV shows to anime to manga to music to games..etc etc etc. If someone can't find something to pass their idle time and momentarily relax from daily life, then honestly the problem is with them.

People really need to learn to let shit go, if something good dies or gets an adaptation/remake that isn't to one's tastes, something better will inevitably take its place. This has happened over and over again to the point where it should be written up as an immutable law.

This used to be way easier before the age of social media proliferation that we're experiencing now. Now you have weirdos whose entire pathetic lives revolve around trying to game the system to put endless variations of "X is good/bad and here's why (insert random sociopolitical buzzword)" in your vision. That's not what's happening. White audiences generally don't care about the race of a character... unless changing the race is part of a thinly veiled slight/insult/"woke" lecture towards white people, (or unless it generally has its origins in political correctness). And that's what much of this "diversity casting" is about. The people working on the shows will claim as much on Twitter.

Since they call it "erasure" when a Pee Oh Cee character is "whitewashed," what are we supposed to assume is their motivation when they make a pale, red-haired character black for the nth time? That's what people don't like.

Criminal Minds' Daniel Henney Joins Wheel of Time Adaptation at Amazon

Criminal Minds‘ Daniel Henney has been cast as al’Lan Mandragoran in Amazon Prime’s series adaptation of The Wheel of Time, TVLine has learned.

In the series of fantasy novels by James Oliver Rigney Jr. aka Robert Jordan, the character, commonly known as Lan, crosses paths with — SPOILERS ALERT? — both Moiraine Damodred (to be played by Gone Girl‘s Rosamund Pike) and Nynaeve al’Meara (Power Rangers‘ Zoe Robins).

The Wheel of Time, which was greenlit last October, is set in a “sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access it,” per the official logline. The story follows Pike’s Moiraine, “a member of the incredibly powerful all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.”



Rafe Judkins (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will serve as showrunner and executive producer.

Since 2015, Henney has been a part of CBS’ Criminal Minds franchise. His character, Matt Simmons, was first introduced in a backdoor pilot for the spinoff Beyond Borders, which launched in 2016. Following that offshoot’s cancellation, Henney transitioned to the mothership, which is set to air its 15th and final season at midseason.

Henney’s previous TV credits also include Hawaii Five-0, NCIS: Los Angeles and Revolution.

I'm almost disappointed that he's apparently 6'2". They should have cast somebody shorter than Moiraine, because at this point why the hell not? Will be interesting to see how they play PoC male "bound" to white female, who has to obey her every whim.
