This actually saddens me to say but, i think he still has enough naivety and childlike beliefs that are keeping him somewhat together, combine that with strong christian teachings, but i don't think those will pop up now.

Give it another 5-10 years when he starts to realize he will never get his god promised crystal, lost his mom, seen that his life is dominated by trolls and depression. That is when Chris will start to think suicidally.
