Where Does the Term 'Zoomer' Come From? -

I understand why kids are called Gen Z. Because we had Gen Xers, and millennials were supposed to be Gen Y but it was a brand new millennium so that made more sense.

I guess zoomer was a term that already existed and since it starts with Z and rhymes with baby boomer it got applied to Gen Z? But what does it mean and who started the trend of referring to kids as zoomers?

What’s crazy is that this year, people who had no idea about life before 9/11 could finally vote, self included. Now with COVID, we’re eventually gonna have people who didn’t know life before COVID getting interested in politics and voting and such. And who knows what could happen between now and 2030-whatever to radically shift how the 18-20 year olds now and the 18-20 year olds in the future see things.

It starts with 'Z' because they're two generations after Gen X. People referred to millennials as Gen Y before the term 'millennial' stuck. As for the name I think it just rhymes with boomer and refers to the fast way they adapt to new technology.

The above link shows they're already naming the new kids "Generation Alpha"
Some members of Gen Alpha (anyone born after 2010) can barely walk, but it’s already set to be the most transformative generation yet. Alphas haven’t just grown up with technology — they’ve been completely immersed in it since birth. Early in their formative years, these children are comfortable speaking to voice assistants and swiping on smartphones. They don’t consider technologies to be tools used to help achieve tasks, but rather as deeply integrated parts of everyday life.
Absolutely pod and bugpilled.

I miss the days when boomers were called The Me Generation and everyone was so scared of what the youth might grow up to be that they named them after the ultimate unknown quantity, X.

Because "Generation Why" never really caught on. GenX did the skeptical questioning for us. Also, Zoomer kids grew up with the internet, instead of the half analog/ half digital thing that most Millennials experienced. And, as you all remember from the late 90's - early aughts... Speed is power.

I remember an article by a "whatever you call a researcher of generations" where she complained about kids today always on their phones and computers and she called them "iGen". Quite like that, shame it never caught on.
