Yeah currently gas prices are a fuck. Tlon's working on a L2 solution which will drastically reduce gas prices to be effectively zero, so you'll pay about 30$ in eth for an ID, then once you get the ID you don't have to fuck with eth again, unless you want to "escape" L2.
Besides that the costs are hosting that shit on your own, but Oracle offers free cloud and a raspberry pi is cheap

Dead internet theory has been pretty much confirmed for a while, there was a time where vacant little known areas of the Internet got a lot of traffic, the boards on 4chan were more than recycled garbage cherry picked by glowies and shills, where even porn was less blacked and cucked. I don't understand why a specific service for a case like this is necessary. Can't you just use Cloudflare's CDN service and then host the file on your site directly and let the CDN take care of the rest?

At any rate, centralizing on Cloudflare is still centralizing. I'm worried about how much of the Internet has this single point of failure, no matter how convenient it is. It might be convenient now but I'd be looking to move onto my own disks as quickly as possible.

Cloudflare's size limit on the CDN is 512mb for paid plans short of the "Enterprise" tier and 5gb for that tier. The limit means anything larger than that size would just "miss" the cache and get served from the origin (your backend server). If you've got more than you and your bros watching a video from that backend, it will be quickly overwhelmed by the traffic.

I don't think $5000/mo for their Enterprise tier (or even the next tier down) is in the cards for someone just starting out, without any revenue, and looking to serve video that will get insta-banned by youtube, patreon, vimeo, et al.

Plus, you still need the storage. Best practice in this day and age is not the bare metal described in Null's article. As he said, what happens when you have to move the bare metal? Then you have unavoidable downtime. The more tenable solution is for your web service to just be code, and for the database and file storage to be separate from it. That way you can freely move any of the three parts/pieces in 15 minutes rather than 15 hours or 15 days. The bare metal hosting is out of necessity in his case, but everyone else can point and click an auto-scaling web service setup in AWS in about 30 minutes that costs ~$50/mo until the traffic (and thus revenue) picks up. When it picks up, they can move to a cheaper host in an hour, without even changing the code, since storage services are abstract and generally API compatible with AWS S3.

Having every politically frowned-upon thing hosted on bare metal offshore is not a tenable solution.

Like I said, before the internet, mass media was controlled by corporations. The only alternatives were stuff like public access TV and xeroxed newsletters that almost no one saw. When the internet went mainstream, the "little people" could speak their mind to a wider audience, and corporations didn't like that. So just like how the powers that shouldn't be flipped out over the invention of printing, they flipped out over the internet - and pushed to make it the sanitized corporate honknet that the Current Year internet is turning into.

I think you're giving them too much credit.

I think this is the case for huge swathes of the internet- they'all content wastelands.

That being said, there are still bright spots for enthusiasts looking for very specific topics, but they're regressing more and more into obscure discussion boards and private discussion groups.

There is no more stumbling into the wonderful (especially as the algorithms continue to decay)- you increasingly need to know where to look, how to look, and who to ask. In a way, it's regressing back to webrings, as general searches have become mostly useless.
