Where the Sidewalk Ends: The Death of the Internet

  • The site is having difficulties because our bandwidth is totally overextended. Our 1Gbps line is at 100% even when there aren't 8000 people on the site. We were supposed to get a second Gbps line months ago but I'm struggling to get technicians scheduled to set it up.

Russia is also an absolutist dictatorship for all intents and purposes most other nations have to at least keep up a veneer of playing nice with the public lest your head be skewered on a stake
Nah, the Russian people are broken, they won't do anything. Maybe if the next generation is not woke and somehow conservative, but with a classical liberal mindset, maybe then they'll do something.

The pendulum will swing back sooner and later, and it's going to be marvelous.
I want to believe but the very fabric of politics, society and even discourse in general seems to be shifting and unraveling at such an exponential rate that it's hard to keep faith.

But then again, that's the impression Web 2.0 leaves on you, and it could be argued that the culture of Web 2.0 is one of the major catalysts of this whole process to begin with: people conditioning themselves to respond to external events and stimuli that are way beyond their ability to influence, or even comprehend, on a primal fight-or-flight level of emotional investment.

Cloudflare is also the one bright spot in terms of recent service offerings.

AWS, Google, et al get you with bandwidth fees more than the cost of the infrastructure itself. It's cheap (or free) to get data into their network, but getting it back out is not. AWS and Google in particular are egregious in their fees to small customers, charging anywhere from $0.08 to $0.12 per GB to get data back out (to users) every month.

To put that in perspective a weekly podcast that is in a 125 MB mp3 file sent out to 200,000 users would cost $8789.06 per month at Amazon's S3 storage service pricing. Note that this doesn't cost AWS nearly that much, their bandwidth egress is estimated to be marked up around 8000%. That's pretty close to the $8000 dollars it would cost to host your podcast with them, as you can see. As the linked post suggests, it's not enough that they're censoring all of us, we're subsidizing them as they do it, paying jacked up bandwidth fees which support the cost of Amazon and Google's own "services" as they plot against us.

Cloudflare just began testing a new service that intends to compete with Amazon's data storage service (S3) called R2. R2 will not charge artificially-scarce bandwidth fees, but rather charge the user for the amount of storage they use and their actual load on the servers (measured in requests). If successful, R2 could be the wedge that begins the split away from places like Youtube, Twitch, Patreon, etc. If people build new services upon R2 to compete with those platforms, it might not be as painful to say... distribute your own video streams.

That's what I've been doing for the past few months: it's not visible or available anywhere (yet) but I've been reproducing all of Patreon's functionality in a platform that can be self-hosted. I've gotta tidy up some GUI stuff and make the page layout process a bit cleaner but other than that, it took a one-man-show less than 6 months to recreate everything they do. The fact that people pay those fuckers 15-18% of their gross to process payments and serve MP3s, only to have them come along later and tell you that your rent money is cut off because of a tweet is baffling to me.

In any case, wider distribution across a multitude of domains makes the job of constant harassment more difficult. When all a pink-haired grifter with a bone in its nose has to do is search youtube and follow engagement from there to a couple of social media sites, it's a lot easier to zero in on targets. Ultimately, from a cultural standpoint, one would hope that fracturing of platforms and services eventually trends us to the point where normies don't see a pink-haired grifter with a bone in its nose in the course of an average day.

If it isn't on public display on twitter for all to see, it's difficult for it to command attention.

Facebook is putting one nail in its own coffin this week with its ridiculous VR thing that no one is going to use. It'll surely take a lot more nails to make them start an irreversible decline, but it will happen. No platform is forever, they all eventually decline.

Once they clamp down on porn, and they will, it might light a fire under enough people's asses.
Doubt it. Turning half the species into indentured mercenaries with diminishing returns is real convenient for perpetual consumerism. I kinda half suspect that some percentage of tips on onlyfans or whatever come from some black budget project.
As dumb as that sounds it's increasingly feeling like we're living in the cube from that movie Cube where the machine is built as the sum of basically aimless mindless automatic evil because what else are you gonna do when your day job is fucking with people, it wouldn't surprise me anyway.

The pendulum will swing back sooner and later, and it's going to be marvelous. Unfortunately things might get very bad before we get there. KF is one of the few places where mentally ill trannies are told the hard truth.
If kissing and praising a tranny means retaining what we got, or even getting a sliver of the wild west back, I'll give em tongue. This shit is far beyond any "Eewwww, man in a dress!" fight.

As far as I'm aware it's content aggregation from people who want to boost their content. I'm mostly interested in informing people about Section 230, payment networks, and how fragile this shit is.
I know it's a bit of a lol...but have you considered contacting your congressman? I assume you still have one and are hopefully Republican. They may be willing to give you 15 minutes of their time. It doesn't have to amount to anything right away, but just getting this shit percolating in that cesspool may eventually grow some fruit.

The biggest problem we have is the Legislature is oblivious to how bad things have gotten. The senior leaders are in on it sure, but the rank and file are a bunch of ancient boomers who think the internet is a series of tubes.

Do you really think the two US political parties disagree?

This is a common issue where too many people get caught up in the left/right dichotomy. Lefty troons are the flavor of the month. There will always be people left right and center who want to censor people, and the power structures that currently exist will always to happy to use these useful idiots to further their agendas.
Yeah there are plenty of left and right people who want to outright revoke section 230 for example. Politics ruins everything, as always.

The fact there is absolutely no mention about the evil of gamergate in this article makes me doubt your journo cred, you will never be a catparty approved article at this rate.
Actually, does anyone know which episode of “Mad At The Internet” it was where Josh made that really good point about how Gamergate started the shitty practice of people going after advertisers?

The internet is too powerful to be allowed to exist outside of the constraints of state and capitalism. It's the single greatest vehicle for mass manipulation and propaganda ever devised. It has no real value outside of.

In 2011 as the entire world experienced revolution and civil unrest stemming from the financial crisis things reached a head. All of that was organized on twitter and facebook. Between that and mass data collection being not only easy with the internet but extremely profitable it was inevitable that corporate interests (and by extension state interests) would begin to capture more and more of the internet's infrastructure. I don't see any way out of that.

Stop trying to put this garbage on life support. The 'internet' is shit and needs to die. The worse censorship gets on mainstream platforms, the more stifled people feel, the more space there is for non-shit websites and platforms to exist.
>tfw a gossip forum is the last remainder of the old Internet
The 'old internet' begins where normalfaggotry ends. If you want I can send you some linkpages and you can learn to browse the internet properly.

I've never received a reply from Matt Gaetz.
