Here’s what the risks are:

In a mass shooting, you can hide, but you can’t run.

In a mass stabbing, you can run, but you can’t hide.

Or in other words, if the shooter sees you run, you’re toast, but whereas with a knife attack, if you can outrun the attacker, you’re safe. Hiding would be stupid if there were a mass stabbing.

Also, yes there have been mass stabbings in the United States, so they do pose a domestic threat, albeit a small one. Examples include:

9/11 - 6 people were killed and a further 5 injured by stabbing before the hijackers gained control of the planes (if you were to tally up the number taken from flight transcripts and reports from all 4 planes together), making it the deadliest mass stabbing/vehicle ramming attack in the US, with a monstrous high score of 2,977 dead and 6,000+ injured.

Attica prison riots - There were 4 inmates who were stabbed to death by fellow prisoners in vigilante killings, along with a correctional officer who was beaten to death with a soup can prior to a 4-day riot and hostage situation that ended with the NYPD firing indiscriminately into the prison, killing 29 inmates and 10 hostages, including 9 correctional officers.

Georgetown killings - During the Jonestown massacre, Sharon Amos had fatally stabbed her two daughters to death before handing the knife to her eldest daughter who then proceeded to stab her to death before turning the knife on herself, ending her own life as well. This occurred at the People’s Temple headquarters building in Georgetown, Guyana in 1978.

And also, stab wounds are indeed srs bsns, because you can only go into shock later on, whereas with guns you would feel it instantly. You could get stabbed with a knife and not even know it. But once your body does experience shock, you will start to experience: vomiting, difficulty breathing, severe pain and dizziness, followed by unconsciousness and death. And you would die from exsanguinarion rather than die instantly (like from a bullet to the brain or heart).

Another thing I’d like to add is that there are no “I’d pull out my gun and kill the shooter instead” options, because you’re in a gun-free zone already.
