I'm probably going to get one of them over the weekend and can't decide between X and Sapphire. Haven't really played since Diamond or Pearl and I know we have a few pokespergs here.

If you want to be up to date; get Alpha
I only got X but honestly I don't know about this either.
From what I see, X has more features compared with Alpha such as player customization. Alpha was alright but there's quite some stuff missing from it e.g. the Battle Frontier being removed.
But I've already played Ruby and Sapphire. I'm asking if one of them is a better buy.
Alpha is more of a remake of Sapphire. If you enjoy Sapphire, try Alpha especially since it's up to date.
But if you feel like you played enough of Hoenn, get X.
I couldn't care less about competative battling.

OR and AS basically have all the extra post game stuff present in X and Y (the Maison), but with more stuff to do in the overworld. In X and Y you really had the Looker sidequest and that was about it. In OR/AS you have a much more substantial post game quest, and more side things to do like contests and secret bases. I think the region is a lot more fun to explore, too. It's also worth noting that if you're a total loser who cares about online battling, IV breeding, EV training and stuff like that, OR/AS have a lot more benefits than X/Y (such as move tutors). Since you don't care about battling this probably means little to you, but its basically loads of additional moves you can give your pokemon for battling, and it helped make some pokemon who were pretty meh into real monsters.
Personally I'd say go for OR/AS. X/Y were fun and I liked the character customization, but there's so much more content in OR/AS. No Battle Frontier is really disappointing, but if we're looking at the stuff that is in the game, its pretty awesome.
Also, way better Elite 4, Champion and rival battles. Plus some third version to X/Y (probably Z) will almost certainly be announced in the near future, so you could just explore the Kalos region in that one.

Why?
I like AlphaSapphire because it has Kyogre in it along with Latias, so I got it for that reason.
