Fearmongering is fun

I agree with this; it is concerning that we as a species are so violent that people need to be armed at church to stay safe. The answer to that concern is not to take away guns, though. The underlying violence is the issue, guns are the vehicle. There will always be a vehicle for violence.

So, has New Zealand banned footage of this shooting yet? I hope they're being consistent about their fascism.

The videos make good comparisons. The Texas video shows your self defense options in a free country. The New Zealand video shows your options when you're depending on the government to protect you (i.e. get shot and die and then the government shows up to count the dead).

Is anyone familiar with different state's gun laws how did he get a gun he was a felon
I doubt that it's difficult to buy a shotgun from a private seller in Texas, and they're not expensive.

Private sellers aren't required to do a background check or ask if you're a felon (and you could just lie, anyway), and as long as the transaction is made in person and nobody's crossing any state lines (which, again, the seller won't necessarily know), there's no requirement to transfer the firearm through a federally-licensed dealer. Basically as long as you don't outright tell them that it's illegal for you to buy the gun (or give them the heebie jeebies so bad that they don't want to sell you a gun) it's perfectly alright for them to sell you a gun.

This is referred to as the "gun show loophole," so called because of the fearmongering that claims anyone can just go to the gun show and buy guns without any background check. Most of the gun sellers at gun shows are dealers, and they are still required to perform a background check; while you can buy a gun from a private seller, those same private sellers could sell their gun literally anywhere else with no more restrictions than what I already mentioned. It wouldn't make sense to put additional restrictions on them just because they happen to be selling a gun at a gun show, because they could just agree to meet up at the nearest public street corner and bypass those extra restrictions entirely.

There's a push to get this loophole closed by simply outlawing private gun sales (effectively forcing every gun sale to go through a licensed dealer who performs a background check), but the effect it would have on simple ordinary folk just trying to buy, sell, or trade their guns (or, say, wanting to transfer it to a relative in their will) would be pretty steep. It'd also be nearly impossible to enforce, since there's little way to track firearms; any attempt to force mandatory registration of firearms tends to be pretty strongly opposed because that just gives "them" a list when "they" decide to try to come take mah guns.

edit: these are the Federal laws, at least. Some states and/or cities pass laws imposing additional restrictions; some, for instance, require all gun sales to be made through a licensed dealer. Basically the dealer just tacks on an additional cost to cover the background check and some profit.

Those same cities are running afoul of State preemption laws; Pennsylvania is a good example. Pretty much the only places that can get away with it, are in States already riddled with onerous gun-control measures.

As for private sales at gun shows; in the past 5-10 years, most have put the kibosh on tailgate sales outside of the show, one way or another. It's expensive just to park at one, much less go in.
And they're no longer places where cheap deals are the rule; gun shows have pretty much just turned into normal dealers trying to sell old overstock at new retail prices, or collectors showing off shit they don't want to really sell in the first place.

Or states with home rule laws allowing municipalities to regulate things in ways that state law doesn't (Pennsylvania is not one of these states iirc and routinely overrides even things like local traffic laws).
