why are western female characters so un-likable? -

Ever since last of us two, i have been thinking why the west cant seem to do female characters (especially main characters) well? the west seems so obsess with trying to make females come off as strong and independent but it always seems they end up looking like complete cunts and sociopaths that act passive aggressive as soon as something goes wrong or god forbid, gets saved by a male. the east females still look, act and sound like girls while still being able to hold their own in a fight without coming of as macho on high-T.

what can the west do and learn from the east to make a more strong but likable female character?

First of all, western female characters just look bad. Like 6/10 tops. I could forgive a women with a shitty attitude if she has a pretty face and a nice rack/ass. But no, women must be mediocre looking to appeal to the female crowd that devs want to sell to, despite more than half a decade of no success.
And personality wise it's not much better. We have basically four personality archtypes for women in video games:
1. LOL quirky. That starts getting annoying once you grow up past the mental age of 16.
2. Suicidely pigheaded to the point of suicide. Which wouldn't been as bad if modern writers didn't think it is a good quality in a human beings and made the women always right.
3. Will burn their family alive for their goals. Basically a self-insert of woke female writers, who deserve a kiwi farm thread (if they don't have one already).
4. NOTHING. Ironically the most likable of the four, this archtype doesn't have an actual personality. If you had to describe the character you'd have very generic traits that you barely remember.

Female characters in the west are made for a different purse than in the east japan.
In the west they are created to serve a story first. and because every medium is infested with SJW at this point, the story they serve is made to further an agenda.
So they are ment to look tough or at least unconventional, and as realistic as possible (because retards lack imagination).
In japan female characters are mascots, made to sell a product. not only their looks but their entire character is made specifically to appeal to some weirdo who is really into that shit.

No female or female-adjacent character is safe from the dick of a japanese salaryman.

Dunno.

I've yet to see an eastern game that would make me actually like a particular female npc/mc. I concur with what Dreamer's saying, they're mostly fetish fuel, fanservice golems with no actual personality beyond acting like a -dere. They're nice to look at, but that's about it. I can't even remember more than a small handful of female characters, despite gaming for over 20 years now. (that's in general, not just eastern ones)

I liked Anna and Fall-From-Grace from Planescape Torment, FemShep was alright I guess, but my favourite is Veronica Santangelo from New Vegas, which is kinda funny because she's not even straight, so it's not like you can't make good and likeable queer characters, it's just that sjw's are absolutely fucking worthless at everything they do.

Can't really comment on anything more modern, precisely because I avoid PC bullshit infested games.

Guess I had a point once, but I certainly fucking lost it.

I liked the not-dyke dyke-haired cowgirl and Ashly Burch homo from Outer Worlds, they were pretty good if not entirely original.

I also thought all of the women in RDR2 were pretty good, but you don't really play as any of them.

More than the writing, I think its the design. Western games have very bland and generic looking female characters, even if the character is interesting. In japanese games, even if the character is a bimbo, if she at least looks cool, you remember them. For example, Asasin Creed: Odyssey. Cassandra is awesome, but every other female character is super bland, specially your main villain. This is specially true in fighting games, where there is barely any writing, I love Mortal Kombat, but its female characters are the weakest part of the game. In the ps2 era, they made the mistake of making everyone a bimbo, in MK11, my main problem is the blandness of the design. I mean, I think its better they embraced a more realistic aproach with the women, but their costumes lack something, they are not iconic, like Chun Li, Cammy or Mai.
