The reason the average Canadian is a leftist is because it is the only way he can justify his existence to the world. He cannot distinguish his nation from the US militarily nor does he speak a different language to the US, sans for the Franco-Canadian but the majority of the white Canadian is Anglo-Canadian and the nation exists merely due to remaining loyal to the British crown, which is no longer relevant in the modern world.

The only way the Canadian can distinguish himself with the US is to be more leftist than middle America and to be self-righteous about it. To the Canadian, being leftist is better than being a part of America, even if it means filling his country with third-worlders.

This is literally true though. Canadians can't talk about politics unless its through an American lens. Canadians constantly complain about the salacious tabloid nature of american politics but that is literally the only reason they know about it. They don't have the wherewithal to see the massive corruption and bullshit in their own country and would rather just ignore it anyway cause that gives them a chance to act superior to their southern neighbours.

That's not really been my experience at all aside how the tabloid nature of Canadian politics, which all western countries seem to share at this point. Also probably different if you talk to someone outside of Ontario and BC. People tend to forget Canada is fucking massive to the point where every province might as well be its own country or two.

I guess I just have more pessimistic conservatives in my friend pool.

The first thing you must understand about Canadian politics is the paramountcy of consensus. This is due to the need to keep the country together; it's unity being threatened by linguistic, regional, at one time religious, and now racial differences. Diversity is not strength.

The second thing to understand is that, for various reasons over the years*, the Liberal Party has been in government for the majority of the country's history. So any time the Tories are in power, any serious attempt to govern from the right is seen as breaking consensus, and they get painted as the bad guy, un-Canadian, being against the common man, etc. And the Grits (Liberals) run with this.

*Including flat out stealing the ideas of other parties.

Canadian healthcare isn't truly "free", as it's one of the direct causes for their enormous taxes. Research also suggests that free healthcare doesn't actually make Canadians any better off than Americans, as their bankruptcy rate (and causes) are roughly identical. This isn't even getting into bureaucratic lapses that make everyone's lives more difficult, such as how the Canadian government refuses to subsidize or properly regulate its foodstuffs, resulting in literal food cartels driving up costs and becoming just another contributor to national poverty.

The sad truth is Canada is just a sad, badly-ran country that nobody respects. The most recent round of Trudeau's gun laws, and nobody fighting against them, is a symptom of that.

It doesn't really matter how large your country is when most of the population is situated in 10-11 dense cities most of which are located on the american border. Canada is huge, but most of it is very uninhabitable (or at least so difficult to live in its not worth trying). They also only have barely a 1/10th the population of America, which only makes it more difficult for Canada to not be consumed by America's influence. Hell, Californians outnumber the canucks.

Canada is also the US's Number 1 trade partner and that means that Canada's economy is very much tied to America's. Everything has to be in relation to America because Canada simply wouldn't have much of a position in the global stage without America backing it culturally, economically and militarily.

ignoring all this, the reason Canadians are leftists is because most of the population are urbanites who import most of their goods because its fucking hard to farm anything other than maple syrup in the cold.

Yeah a lot of Canadians aren't particularly happy with the health care system, as wait times can be tremendous.

OP the Canadians you're referring to are Toronto and Vancouver Canadians. There are a lot of those types in the big cities that think they are better than America, yet depend on American trade, media, etc for everything. They are the Californians and New Yorkers of Canada, and like in the states, the rest of the country is ashamed to be associated with them
