Big government needs a compelling origin story where they actually did something right to justify its existence. That story is WW2. To maintain that narrative:
1. Jews must be above reproach
2. Communism isn't THAT bad (because why else would we go to war to defend Poland, only to give it to Stalin after the war?)

You see a similar pattern of post-hoc justifications for naked power grabs re: the Civil War and Iraq. It really is the American way.
