The more specific question I want to know that some people in this thread pointed out is why do Shonen anime and fighting games in particular have such a large black demographic?

They make otherwise mundane toys like beyblades or yugioh cards seem cool. Keep in mind that most people in the west are introduced to anime through shows based on toys/trading cards when they are children.

One could posit that the art style is part of the appeal, given how 'exotic' and expressive it is in comparison to western animation. That must be part of the reason why western animation tried to look more 'anime' during the early Oughts.
