Why do American's wear shoes inside their own houses? -

Historically America was a frontier, meaning that we arn't pansies and arn't afraid of dirt and needed to wear boots all the time because our house might be attacked by a bear and fighting off bears with bare feet isn't fun that is why they call bears bears.
To elaborate on this, I think maybe it's also a cultural holdover influenced by other frontier conditions like most people having dirt floors or not bothering with spittoons when chewing tobacco.

Its probably regional, I certainly don't wear shoes in my house. Unless its the dead of winter and I need a pair of slippers or something. I know a fair amount of people who wear shoes into their basements even if they have cement floors down there. Other than that I've never even heard of this.

I leave mine at the door. I have relatives that wear shoes inside though, It's actually not that bad of an idea if you want to get dirt all over your floor.

Remember this scene with Dave Chapelle as Rick James? Yeah, that's pretty much what you're doing to your carpet every time you walk on it with shoes after you've been outside.

I for one prefer not to grind dirt, shit, cigarette, bodily fluid etc. particles into my carpet from the outside.
