It would be unfair to say that only religion causes wars or is the sole factor behind many wars (there really never is just one reason a war starts), even in the case of the First Crusade in which geopolitics was as much of a factor as faith was. It would also be equally unfair to say religion has never been a factor, a major factor, or intensified situations.

Your question boils down to "why do Atheists believe that ideology causes war?" Disagreements sometimes lead to war, especially if you disagree on something that has great emotional and spiritual importance and is believed to be as real as water being wet

Even without religion, wars would be fought over land rights, resources, economics, favorite brand of soft drink.

I mean the Crusades- what most people will point to as a Western "Holy War"- was really more about the acquisition of wealth and land for the Vatican and allied European states than anything else.

Religious reasonings are just the propaganda fed to the peasants fighting the wars. Nowadays the peasants are led to believe that they are spreading democracy, the right to make kids trans and the right to spread AIDS. The soldiers are as big zealots now than they used to be back in the day, however their religion is gayer.

Religion and superstition are not the cause for wars, but the tools to enforce obedience amongst soldiers to fight wars that doesn't benefit them at all. Ultimately it all boils down to resources and land.
