Long hair is an expensive pain in the ass for anyone to keep looking clean and healthy. Not to mention the exorbitant cost of a good stylist. Sooooo, not only lesbians, but older women also get plain fed up with maintaining something that is more bother than it's worth. Seems to me that women keep their hair long mainly to please men.

For some women its a point of pride to have extremely long hair

They aren't trying to attract men???

Men and lesbians are not attracted to woman in entirely the same way. A large part of men's desire is to procreate with that women. That wouldn't be a factor when it comes to lesbians. So maybe long healthy hair is a factor in that? Feminity, a symbol of good health. Longer hair is more difficult to maintain, that could be a representation of something.

Something along those lines seems most likely to me.

There also may be a subculture angle to it, wanting to appear different, as a lesbian. Maybe to get hassled less by men.

Is there any reason? Do they want to look more manly and not feminine?
Conventionally attractive (including conventionally attractive styles like long hair for women) get criticized in plenty of lgbtq communities.

I've heard a numbet of "why don't you have any piercings / you are not very serious about smashing the gender binary are you / why don't you get a face tattoo / why do you have long hair" conversations when I used to buy my books at a local feminist book store, as well as at feminist events.

In my city/subculture when I came out it was visual signalling. Lesbians had short hair. It's just what was done. When I started out I got a certain amount of pressure to hack all my hair off to prove I was one of them and when I didn't, it was implied I was a really straight woman who was just playing around with other women until I found a bloke I liked. Or else that I was an extreme submissive lipstick lesbian looking for a hardcore, cross dressing dom bulldyke. Yeah, I didn't really like the people on scene much, I have to say.

I'm not sure what the current culture is like. It's been a while since I was out in it. I know it's been invaded by all of these "queer" kids who are completely straight but say they're queer for Tumblr clout, so hey, maybe long hair is actually socially acceptable now.

They hate themselves and they wish they were men. A huge number of them were sexually abused as children and their response is to look as unattractive as possible in order to not gain unwanted sexual attention from men. It's the same with girls who become extremely obese right around pubescence: they do it deliberately so Step Daddy won't come into their room at night anymore.
