Why do so many artist girls have some sort of mental disorder? -

After repeatedly diving into different communities and chatting with artist girls from here and there I realized that a good chunk of them (like 70% from my personal experience) are mentally unwell in one way or another. BPD, chronical depression, the list goes on. Bonus points if they have some retarded worldview \ political alignment. What's the deal with artist girls nowadays? Why can't they function like normal human beings?

Personally, I think likely only a small number of them have legit mental illnesses. Their "mental illness" is an oversharing type attention-seeking behavior, and their interest in art is just an extension of their desire for attention.

I think you're ignoring artists who have a following that is mostly offline as well as the large number of male artists who are mentally ill. I think mentally ill artists flock to deviantArt and other angsty platforms (like Tumblr) where they can get a larger following of other BPD teens who think stuff like Tearza's self-harm giga-thick femboy cartoon characters are deep. On KF we tend to focus on dA and Tumblr artcows who are overwhelmingly female and mentally ill, but do not represent all or even most artists. I'm sure that mental illness is fairly common among artists (probably some correlation between mental illness and creativity, as well as mental illness and being unable to hold a "real" job) but if your main source for art is dA or Tumblr, it will start to look like all artists are borderline teenaged girls.

I know Wikipedia isn't generally considered a reliable source, but here's the page on mental illness and artists. Basically, there's a thin line between madness and genius, and "individuals with mental illness are said to display a capacity to see the world in a novel and original way; literally, to see things that others cannot."

Most artists seem to be mentally ill (~50% have depression), so it's not a female artist thing.

In my opinion, mental illness among artists should be a "good" thing, because having someone who might think radically different from the normal population will produce very thought provoking and mold breaking art, as well as inventing strange and interesting styles of art. It can also be a medium for said people to express their idiosyncratic beliefs and feelings which can take cool forms. Of course, this doesn't always work, but I'm talking more of someone like a Van Gough who was a troubled person and poured that into his work, rather than a troon drawing existing characters as fatter and darker versions of the original.

Its pretty much this. They're 'mentally ill' because they're women. There are plenty of egirls nowadays saying they're mentally ill online for attention whether they're into art or not. Its an easy way to get sympathy and attention when you're upper middle class since suddenly you're extra marginalized and have authority on mental illness. The only artistic superpower women have is better grasp of color, but that was enough to make them think they could become better artists than men only to then waste any such talent on gay shit.

I'm ashamed to say many moons ago that I went to art school for two years. It isn't just the girls, 90% of everyone is fucked up in some way who attends art school/is an artist.

It's almost a prerequisite. The comparatively 'normal' people in my classes were the ones who graduated into landscape design, wedding photography, or designing graphic posters for businesses and commercial events. The people painting tortured self portraits or doing installations involving lard and cut-n-paste typefaces were the ones with mental issues, troubled upbringing, and substance abuse issues. I was not unique in that sense.

Unsurprisingly, when I worked through a lot of the shit from my youth, I pretty much stopped exploring the wilder/more experimental sides of artistic expression. Years after I painted oil landscapes. As of right now, I haven't touched a paintbrush for over two years.
