Why do we make such a big deal about mass shootings? -

Why do we obsess over guns when heart disease and cancer kill far more people, and are much more easily preventable than figuring out what to do about guns in America?

People are supposed to die of old age. Maybe a heart attack or cancer or a freak accident. Lots of forms of death are preventable - don't be like Evel Knievel or Amberlynn Reid - but there isn't anything you can do to stop you from getting mowed down by a maniac. Especially gun control.

To answer the question posed in the OP: "who's 'we,' kemosabe?" The mainstream media has a list of narratives to promote, and a list of narratives to bury, and reporting can be quickly predicted from how well it can be slotted into a predetermined story- that's why you get so many milquetoast "muh global warming" takes whenever a natural disaster happens. Consider the attempted mass shooting of Steve Scalise and his colleagues, or the actual mass shooting of cops in Dallas- did the press endlessly ruminate over those? Oh, fuck no, they were problematic for the agenda and got buried as quickly as possible. Consider: the mainstream media, collectively, fell for the UVA rape hoax like a ton of bricks despite the fact that anyone with basic medical training could smell a rat. For about thirty-six hours, they were convinced that Nikolas Cruz was a WN, because someone at the ADL (or was it the SPLC? One of those lefty hatchet organizations) had told them so, based on information from /pol/. They have certain things that they believe, and promote or bury stories based on how much they reinforce those beliefs. They are propagandists. That is all.

Isn't suicide the biggest lead in gun related deaths? Killing other people is a bit different than killing yourself. Not to mention that a good many of these spree shootings were actually failed bombing attempts like Columbine.

Why do we obsess over guns when heart disease and cancer kill far more people, and are much more easily preventable than figuring out what to do about guns in America?

Cancer and heart disease do not a deliberate act of murder made by a cognizant intelligence make though.

When a large group of people, specifically children dies, at the same time, it hits a community hard. The reporting on this, regardless of political bias, also hits the general morale of people. When you go to schools, malls, or are surrounded with any large groups of people without the lingering fear that you’re going to die.

I think it is also something inevitably political. The disproportionate amount of shootings that occur in America, which is supposed to be a prosperous and safe country, is something that cannot be ignored.
