Why do you follow lolcows? -

I dunno if there was a similar thread made specifically about Chris in discussion or not, but with the new Lolcow General subforum I thought it might be interesting to look at it from a broader angle.

It's something I've been thinking about over the past week. Is following what stupid people on the internet do or say inherently bad in some way? Why do I and other people do it?

I've actually been kind of split recently on the whole thing. Since it is a bit of schadenfreude either way. On the one hand, people are always going to make fun of others. And that ultimately we're being more open about something other people just don't speak about. That and how this sort of thing might encourage people to make better choices in their lives and "not turn out like that Chris Chan guy"

On the other hand it is low hanging fruit so to speak, and it breeds things like negativity and harassing others. Even if they bring it on themselves.

What are your opinions? Why do you follow lolcows? Is it just "because it's funny :epik:" or do you have some broader motivation in mind?

For no particular reason, really. I stumbled upon Chris one day a few years back and have been sort of addicted ever since. Then I discovered there are more Lolcows out there, and I began to follow them the same way one would follow a celebrity or a band, checking every once in a while for news on what they're up to.

There's no broader goal because I'm not a ween.

artsy lolcows are my favorites, but i have pretty high standards for lolcows since i've been following their wacky antics for about 10 years. there's always this one that snags my heart until they jump the shark or fade away.

the conclusion i came to is not only is the whole "irl cartoon character" thing hilarious, i love the surrealism some have, but for the artistic lolcows i actually find something really admirable about how they all seem to think they shit gold. obviously that's not a good attitude for an artist or anyone to have, but as someone who's struggled with depression for over 10 years, i actually envy their usi. even though their usi is a key component of lolcowdom. they're nutty and weird and crazy, and they don't care, and i love it. i love looking into the twisted minds of complete nutters. i love it when they pour themselves into their creations. i love it when real people are trans-cartoon-kin.

I've always loved reading up on weird news, and reading about crazy people and their antics has always been extremely amusing to me. I love observing them and getting excited over the most recent crazy shit they've done, and at times speculating what they might do next or how a current event might continue to escalate. In a way it's like watching a cartoon unfold in front of you, except the only person behind these nutty antics is the characters themselves, making it really unpredictable and entertaining.

I usually follow lolcows to point and laugh at them to give me some entertainment, but I also get to know some other misc. stuff which I didn't bother to find out about it until that lolcow brought it up. When this happens I'm usually interested in this.

For example, I get to know more about the video game industry thanks to DarkSydePhil and the Zoe Quinn drama. I also got introduced to some pretty good games/franchises etc. that I don't know about such as POSTAL 2 thanks to Jace.

Because sometimes I feel the need to remind myself that at least I have a future. At least I'm not a sick fuck. At least I'm not CWC. :alog:

In no particular order.

- They're funny

- Its like watching a trashy reality show. Entertaining and horrifying.

- They do inspire me to strive to be a better person.

- The psychology behind them is often fascinating.

This last one I didn't want to bullet point because its kind of weird. But I feel like by following lolcows I get to kind of keep my finger to the pulse of internet culture, which is also fascinating to me. I had no clue what the fuck an 888chan was before I started following Chris. I learn alot about all these different communities while being apart of a really cool one in the cwckiforums.

So yeah thats about it, I think.

People find "crazy" interesting. I know I do.

Plus, people like Chris remind me that I should always strive to improve myself and do the absolute best I can.

Also, they remind me that no matter how bad things, things can always be worse.

University moving away from where I live? Ah well, at least I didn't pierce my taint.

I started following lolcows because I just found them and their shenanigans to be entertaining and interesting. A lot of them also seem to have psychological issues with them and I'm very interested in mental illness and I learn a thing or two about psychology from watching them.
