Why hasn't Thanksgiving been overshadowed by Christmas?

Every year, the fucking Christmas ads start earlier. They're airing before Halloween now. Believe it or not, this was actually inspiration for the Nightmare Before Christmas, Halloween getting its own back. Anyway, here's me worrying that we're going to lose Halloween altogether when I find out the yanks have a holiday a month later perilously close to Christmas that involves family get togethers and a traditional turkey dinner. Are you fucking kidding me? I would have expected the fuckers to have merged by now. What's your secret?
