William James Mitchell(Billy) was a video game celebrity famous for his high scores in a number of games, most notably Pac Man and Donkey Kong. He gained much recognition for the achievements, including a place in the Twin Galaxy leader boards and even being mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records. Years after the fact, however, evidence would emerge that many(if not all) of his records were fraudulent, leading to his name being removed from the various publications. Bitter at this loss of fame, Billy threatened numerous lawsuits for both libel and slander, eventually following through in 2019 when he sued Twin Galaxies. Due to a misspelling in the original filing, labeling the defendant as Twin Galexies, Billy refiled the case appropriately against Twin Galaxies in February 2020(for the amount of $10,000,000), along with a separate suit against Jeff Harrist, Jeremy Young, donkeykongforum.com(for the amount of $2,000,000). In April 2020, Billy would file a suit against Benjamin Q Smith(for the amount of $1,000,000), a popular youtuber under the username Apollo Legends, who had extensively covered Billy's fraudulent activities.

People still give a shit about high scores? I thought that shit died out once video games started to have actual stories and endings and the only thing people cared about was actually finishing/completing the games.
yeah it's kinda weird but billy mitchell sort of made a livelihood out of it. he had the world records for both pac-man and donkey kong, something that your average boomer would understand and maybe appreciate. he used that notoriety to start a restaurant business and sell hot sauce and he's worried that negative press is going to hurt his bottom line, it's all economics for him

I always thought a lot about this guy was just a character, like he wasn't actually a total asshole and lunatic when he wasn't playing Donkey Kong. Maybe it was all just an act at one point but at some point the character Billy Mitchell and the real person Billy Mitchell became one and the same.

This case looked hilariously stupid when it first started back in 2018, I'm glad to see it's still on and now even more stupid.

The high score community that centers around Twin Galaxies are a bunch of aging autistic boomers perpetually stuck in the 80s. It's full of fucking weirdos like Billy Mitchell, salty cheaters like Todd Rodgers (submitted a bunch of fake world records), and a couple of convicted pedophiles.

IIRC he didn't start that business, he inherited it from his parents and used his notoriety to promote it.

Beautiful post baba ghanoush

I am wondering...I never saw that documentary but judging from videos I feel like Billy Mitchell is the type of person who generally exudes body odor because he constantly played arcade games for hours at a time

The two guys who would have fought against everyone protecting their high score was Billy Mitchell, and "Mr Activision" or Todd Rogers as it was the both the thing that made them famous and made them money.

First it was Rogers to get outed as a blatant liar and cheater, and his defense was basically saying, "Bruh, my hands aren't warmed up. Cmon man".

Then it was Mitchell who threw hissy fits whenever anyone criticized him or made a parody of him. Example: Dude got super pissed at Regular Show (A show about a raccoon and a blue jay on Cartoon Network) when they made a parody of Mitchell who cried over his high score and literally had a big head.

He picked the perfect person to sue. Apollo Legends will not back down from this. This is going to be amazing.

Apollo Legend wants to get a bunch of people together and collectively countersue Billy Mitchell for defamation. Some lawyer told him it would cost $10,000 at most. 🤣

As mentioned earlier, Mitchell sells hot sauce. He sells it under the name Rickey's World Famous Louisiana Hot Sauce. I wonder if this will harm or help his sales in the short term and also longer term. When you look at general reviews, the first thing that stands out is that many reviews are from video game websites. After that the common user review starts with "I bought it as a joke and..." before describing the quality of the sauce. This could give his sales a short term jolt as people buy the sauce as a joke, though I can't imagine he'll sell that many more than normal. On the other hand when this case implodes around him, I expect the hot sauce empire to take a hit.

I would also want to know how good/bad his hot sauce is, I'm a fan of hot sauce. But fuck this guy, I'm not giving him a penny.

I remember years back, AVGN bought a bottle of his hot sauce, though it was straight-up Billy Mitchell branded with pac-man or something on the label. Had a bud who had the same bottle, according to him it's genuinely hot but only tastes ok-ish. No idea on the current stuff.

Edit: here's the AVGN episode https://youtu.be/km9vYa2GIUI?t=403
Apparently this was given out/sold at a convention in '09

I've attached the retraction letter Billy Mitchell sent to Twin Galaxies and Guinness Book of World Records prior to the lawsuit, his 156-page "Evidence Package", his amended complaint against Twin Galaxies, and their motion to dismiss.

There's a speedrunning community about beating games as fast as possible and in some ways it's similar. In fact, there was someone who did score runs at one of the most recent GDQ events beating an arcade game and it stood out.

The difference here is that community cracks down harder on splicers from the get go.
