Mental illness is a metaphor for life-adjustment difficulties. "Mental illnesses" are not the same as real medical conditions.

Let's examine the difference. If a man goes to the doctor experiencing sudden unexplained weight loss and the doctor suspects cancer, he can order a biopsy to confirm or deny this suspicion. The statements "Joe has severe unexplained weight loss" and "Joe has cancer" mean very different things even if they are related. The former refers to a symptom and the latter a cause.

"Mental illnesses" such as depression are defined only by their symptoms. The statement "Joe has depression" conveys no more information than the statement "Joe is chronically unhappy." The former and latter statements mean exactly the same thing. So why is one considered to be a medical diagnosis and the other is not? There is no reason beyond the arbitrary authority of the therapy guild. Psychiatry is shuck and jive all the way down.

This is not to say the "mentally ill" don't have life adjustment difficulties. I know I do. It's just that life adjustment problems is what they have and not "mental illnesses"

It may be more helpful to know the specific condition(s) your doctor diagnosed you with, then.

I guess it is over-the-top hyperbole to call psych meds poison but all they did for me was make me fat and sluggish. Any benefits they provide can be had tenfold and with far less side effects with White Russians.

So the problem isn't that they can throw you in the psych ward to keep you from leaving, the problem is that they HAVE to throw you in to keep you from doing something stupid. I apologize, I missed the part where you were assigned a caretaker. If you are indeed dealing with mental health issues, then failing to take your medication is going to undermine any effort you might make to move out on your own.

Well I don't have any caregivers any more because I made life so miserable for them they decided to help me get on my feet. It came to a head when a houseparent told me to sweep the kitchen floor and I told the bitch I was playing Primordia and she should take the broom and shove it up her cunt. Of course, her next move was to try to have me thrown in the hospital like many times before but this time the doctor would not admit me. After that, they decided to work with me. I just ran into a guy who works in county mental health at a Mexican restaurant and he told me they had weekly staff meetings just to discuss my issues.

So are you saying that before you took the meds you were fit and energetic?

I much more fit and energetic now that I've ditched the psych meds.

That's because schizophrenia is a basket term, rather like muscular dystrophy (one of those unassailable true and honest physical maladies you mentioned before) wherein there are several varieties with often wildly different causes, but mostly similar symptomatic profile and treatment options.

Just so you know - The sort of person who responds with violent epithets when asked to help maintain the house they live in is either a teenager, or someone with mental issues. I'm sure you'd be perfectly content to lounge in your own filth until you die, but unfortunately, other people need to step over and around you, and social conscience demands a token effort is made to keep you from choking on your own obstinateness. This courtesy won't last forever, however, and the effort is token. Have you thought about what happens when you burn out everyone around you, and they decide to stop tolerating you? What will happen when you get your freedom, Andrew? Will you work? Who would want you? What are you good for? Can you perform the basic social necessities to make it through a day of work, doing as you're told?

Do me a solid, Andrew. Go to the nearest big city. Find some homeless people. Give them some food, and talk to them. You'll find you have a lot in common. Ideally, this experience will highlight your very probable future, enough that you admit you've got something wrong, just like those poor souls dying on the street. More likely, you'll just get some critically important exposure to a culture that will dominate most of your life. Either way, you need to do this.

So, the fact that your doctor wouldn't admit you is a very promising start- it shows that you're not a danger to yourself and/or others. And you seem to indicate you've been working one on one with said doctor, without your parents. In that case, your hostile behavior to the cleaning lady is particularly confusing, as making threats at someone asking you to do a basic chore is not the habit of someone who can be trusted to be on their own.

I pass a particular homeless man on occasion. Completely filthy, obviously schizophrenic, lost in his own delusions. I kind of wonder sometimes, how did he get there? Did he have any family? Was he a criminal or just unfortunate?

Then I came to this thread. Get some fucking help before you degenerate completely. I'm going to hand out some free wisdom others gave out in this thread. The world doesn't give a fuck about you or your problems. Most people are selfish and only care about what they can use you for. The only thing other Wizards care about is how long you listen to their problems before you finish talking about your own. You are always on your own and there won't be people to wipe your ass for you forever. Forget about having sex, you are barely holding on so that should be the last thing you should be thinking about.

This isn't the movies. There won't be some heroic doctor trying to save you. Your family will give up on you eventually, if they haven't already. They won't come and save you. Schizophrenia worsens with age if you aren't on meds with each successive episode. It will lead to a cascading failure where you will not even be able to depend on the government and end up homeless and on the street.

Either help yourself or become a homeless man with piss stained pants shouting at passer-byes to do his house-keeping.

My 70-something great-aunt, who's been a nun for her entire adult life is schizophrenic. This was figured out 10 years ago (when she was 60) when, over the course of about 5 months, she:

-Drove one of the convent's vans up an exit ramp because "The Virgin Mary spoke to me on the radio."
-Defaced all the crucifixes in her convent by prying the figures of Jesus off of them, because "He's been up there long enough, I can hear him screaming in my sleep."
-Attacked the Mother Superior with a knife while completely naked, screaming about how she (the Mother Superior) was "the Whore of Babylon".

Explain how this is "life adjustment and quirky, odd habits".
