Only reason I'd watch it is if there were serious, bonecrushing, careerending injuries. I prefer seeing women get hurt to seeing them miss 3 pointers.

Legit question. Why do “American” sports play the national anthem before non-international matches? National anthems are only customarily played before matches between international teams here.

Is it a compulsory thing like the saluting the flag thing you do in schools?

Patriotism, MURICA FUCK YEAH attitude.

Also probably because sports in America are primarily attended by groups of people who are pro America(not basketball) so they don't mind and it's something everyone can get behind. Remember some states are as big as european countries. It's a unifying thing.

In completely unrelated news, Andre Iguodala complemented a WNBA player that he saw on TV and she went on a PMS fueled tirade about how he disrespected her by calling her by number and not by name. Even though plenty of athletes are identified by their numbers, but Andre should know better than to marginalize women.

KD trolling her after almost made me a fan again.

On the other hand, aren't their similar traditions in European sports, i.e. in F1, where the Race Winner's National Anthem is played during the podium ceremony, I think.

Why is the WNBA so unpopular?
I imagine the players walking out on the anthem is icing on the cake. Disrespecting the anthem has always tended to be bad optics no matter how woke, stunning, or brave the people doing it are supposed to be. However...

But they have one thing going for them...

"Good fundamentals"
Even if you take out the major athletic factor and just focus on shooting the basketball.
Men's basketball at higher levels tends to be more fast-paced and high scoring. Fans also enjoy seeing their favorite teams and players score as many points as possible during a game.

Women's basketball, on the other hand, is more team-oriented and teams tend to run more half-court sets/plays which slow the game down which in turn means less scoring. From my own experience with girl's and women's basketball, the shooting percentages do tend to be slightly lower than those in the men's game -- even with the smaller basketball -- which also contributes to the low scoring.

There used to be the ABL that started before the WNBA, but it simply couldn't compete with the latter. Most teams folded with the remaining ones being absorbed by the WNBA, and many ABL players being signed by WNBA teams.

If I recall, the WNBA first started with teams exclusively in cities with NBA teams so to share arenas and reduce facility costs. I don't think that's the case now, but attendance has always been low for WNBA teams and others have already mentioned that the NBA heavily subsidizes teams and the league to keep them all afloat.

Even if the WNBA players make less than their NBA counterparts, this is still an example of privileged people failing to see the irony in their demands to help or stand up for the oppressed while they behave in a way that drives more of a wedge between the races instead of bridging that wedge.

Another issue is the fact the WNBA has a large number of lesbian athletes. Early in the WNBA's history, a straight player once confessed she felt marginalized because she was one of the few players without a girlfriend. I believe she also mentioned how those lesbian couples also made it a point to make as many public displays of affection as possible around their teammates. Even if most people have come to accept same-sex relationships, they still dislike seeing overt PDAs from any couple whether same or opposite sex.

How many people have worn a sports jersey and had someone refer to them by the number on it? It's not inherently disrespectful unless it's done in bad faith or with ill intent. TBF, I think Andre -- like most people -- was unfamiliar with the team's roster and just referred to Aerial Powers by her number largely out of habit when someone doesn't know the player's name. She could have found a polite way to associate her name with her number, but she instead screeched about it -- making her look like more of jerk than Andre ever was for referring to her by her number.

Especially in the modern NBA, we associate most of the greats by number.

MJ was 23, which is why Lebron is 23.
Kobe was 8 for half his career and 24 the other half.
Larry Bird was 33
Kevin Durant is 35

I can go on. The fact that she considered referring to players by number and not name disrespectful is just an incorrect statement.

Reason female sports isnt popular is because it doesnt play to the male power fantasy.

Men watch sports so they can project themselves into the players and feel potent. That's why even the most racist white guy would prefer to watch an entire team of well built and physically powerful black guys vs a team of women who only pretend to be masculine.

This also explains why most of sports fans tend be working class. So they can for a set amount of time feel as they are the powerful player on the screen and for awhile pretend they matter. Then its weekend over and becoming the bell end for some clueless manager.

Its also because Sports is something you consume in the US.
there is no heart in american sports, no Ultras, no club songs, etc.

I feel like I disagree but would like you to elaborate
I can take my Milk money, buy a Team and move them. thats only possible in the US. American football games are just boring, everything is planned by corporate, everything is super tame---

you will never see something like
