I actually remember coming across a political fanfiction, yes they exist, on Deviantart where Palin’s family was killed by wolves and Trip, her downs syndrome son, mated with one or something. Read this thread last night, and watched some of the cartoons this morning. Having a hard time determining if the "Wolf AMV" in the OP is being sarcastic or not because that's some shit tier animation. I'm not exactly an animation expert, but for those of you who are in the same or similar boat as me regarding Flash, the "animation" being done in that video is less than basic shit. The majority of the animation was motion tweening with only very very few instances of anything drawn frame-by-frame, and the majority of the FBF parts were all eye animations. Truly amateurish.
Anyways, as for the pervasiveness of wolves and canids I believe that has something to do with the context of the dog being "man's best friend". It's not so much wolves specifically, but the fact that many American families have pet dogs and that the animal is pretty much everywhere. You'd be hard-pressed to go a single day without seeing a dog in some form whether that be in person, in a cartoon, in a picture, in a movie, etc. Obsession with dogs/wolves isn't inherently furry -- as there are plenty of rednecks who have tacky wolf clothing or decorated collectible knives or whatever -- but "furry" definitely plays a significant part.
Canine furries are popular for the reasons above, and because wolves are generally seen as "outsiders" or "edgy", it would make sense that the 11 to 17 year old demographic would be all over that for obvious reasons. I cannot even begin to quantify the number of furries I've met in my lifetime whose fursona was a wolf, let alone the entire canid family; that's literally the majority of the fandom. Hell, even Super Collie is a fucking dog.

I was in the Warrior Cats fandom for a time in my younger days and the wolfaboos were everywhere there. They still are in fact. You can't go three threads in a Warriors RP board without running into a "WolfClan" or "Warriors with wolves" RP, it was/is the most ridiculous thing.

I agree that the popularity of canid furries has its roots in domestic dogs. That's probably why feline furries seem to come in second, because cats.

People make shit exactly fucking like this (with either wolves, cats or general sparkle animals) and call it an AMV all the time and refer to themselves as "animatiors" and say "I'm gonna work at Disney!" the first video in that collection I posted is incredibly generic and serves to show what the youtube "wolf animation" community usually does.
This particular scene from that anime Wolf Children made many wolfaboos and wolf furries whimper and cry.
