fuck thats impressive, i was saying the metorologists were jewing up the stats and thats why we got a whole lot of technical hurricanes recently, and that this might be the once in a decade thing where we have no major hurricanes, on the plus side it managed to not hit anywhere people care about. For posterity's sake, Laura actually came dangerously close to hitting Category 5 criteria just before landfall. Most official sources quote it as having reached 150 mph sustained winds at the time that the eye was just about to touch the coast.


Unofficially, some measurements clocked it as having reached 155 mph just before landfall – for all practical purposes just barely pushing it into Cat 5 at some point.

Laura's got a hell of a lot of kick to her despite weakening so quickly on landfall.
