Since it seems that we're kind of mixing video and tabletop games on this forum, I was wondering if there are any World of Darkness fans here. For those of you who don't know, WoD is a tabletop series where mystical beings (vampires, werewolves, mages, ghosts, etc) have been living with us in secret since the start and you play those creatures. I loved that it dove into different aspects and cultural history to give you a new look on things (like the Tremere who are bureaucratic vampire-mages). So I'm not the only one, right?

I was big into it back in the day, dropped it when they blew up the setting in the 2000s. I was flipping through some old Wraith and Werewolf books a few weeks back. Freak Legions is still a great book.

They brought back the original setting last year. They treat it as if the end of times scenarios haven't happened yet. They updated some stuff, finally finished the rest of the revised conventionbooks, went into the White Howellers and the lost ferra.

Interesting. So is it the 3rd edition setting where the Gangrel left the Cam and the Tremere Antitribu poofed or is it still back in 2nd?

World of Darkness makes for a nice story and it's fun to read about the different clans and disciplines and all the histories, though I hear the old WoD timeline was a tangled mess. Never looked into it myself, though. Didn't have the energy to map everything out myself. Everything's rather depressing, though. All those ways being supernatural can screw a person over, and all those ways not being supernatural means a person is so much meat walking around waiting to be eaten. I prefer the Dresden Files RPG / setting. More hopeful. I like hope.

I don't play it, though. I'm not sure tabletop RPGs are my thing. If I get within three feet of a pen, paper and d10 all at once my eyes start to bleed.

My boyfriend was forced to play OWoD (VtM) with his group and he hated it. Hated the mechanics, hated the way everything was actively working to screw the player character over, especially hated how DMs could exploit the mechanics and setting to force players to trudge along whatever nasty old railroad the DM had in mind. The group's since tried out NWoD (I think he's done Hunter and Werewolf) and he liked them better, though there are still things about it that peeve him.

But like I said, I'm not very much into playing the game. I just like a good story. WoD stories have the potential to be decent.

My favorite NWoD setting is Geist: The Sin-Eaters. Feels like they updated Wraith to make it not stupidly grimdark edgy. You can even get along with your Geist. I like that.

Still not gonna play it, though.

iirc Old WoD had different histories for everything, with the intent being that the GM would use whatever was relevant to their game in particular.

I've played a few NWoD and OWoD. The New Hunter and Werewolf were the ones I liked the most. This OWoD homebrew called
Highlander: The Quickening is absolutely amazing though and if you're a WoD fan you should check it out.

Disney's Gargoyles had some pretty good fanmade rules, too, from my experiences with it.

I love Changeling the Lost! Geist is fun too - actually some of the best games I've ever played were geist games- but my favorite will always be Changeling. It's just so fun to build a character!

Changeling the Lost was a vast improvement over Dreaming and is my favorite of the New World of Darkness series.

Dcisp: I've seen that one; it looked really cool.

Shameless Plug Time: I've written my own homebrew called, Angel: The Revelation (used to be called, Nephilim: The Chosen). Which focuses on human-angel (regular and fallen) hybrids trying to prepare the world for the "New God."

While I quite like the idea of WoD, I've always found the actual games to be populated by edgelords. You know, the ones who shoed up just to show off how cool and unrestrained by society's rules they are, man. The ones who want everyone to know how dark and edgy the are.

I remember one guy in particular. We were vampires, about to storm a Sabbat hideout. We'd all brought ropes, except him. He just brought a random person from off the street. When asked why, he just gave a smug grin and said, "I have my reasons."
OK, I thought, he's planning on using them as a distraction, fair enough.
So there we are on the roof, getting ready to fast-rope through a skylight, when he says, "I rip the bitch's stomach open and use her intestines as a rope."
Why? What was the point?

That's where the GM should let him try, roll consequences on Humanity or Path of Whatever, then let him fall flat on his face as his hands slip or it rips or whatever. And there's a pile of wood down there so you're staked.

We made the mistake of trying to talk him out of it. The GM offered him a chance to reconsider, he refused. We explained that slippery, stretchy tubes don't make a good fast line. He insisted they would.
We tried pointing out that this was supposed to be a covert mission, and that the body and the pool of blood was evidence that the mortal cops would be all over. He just gave that smug grin and said, "It won't come to that."
Then we said it was just plain dumb, not to mention creepy. He said we obviously didn't have the stomach for a vampire game, and left.

That sort of stuff can be fun for one-off Break Shit and Giggle Sabbat games, but yeah, doing that when it's disruptive to the ongoing game is dumb.

That guy is always so smug.

Fun fact though, Vampire was the first tabletop I ever actually played a proper campaign in.

Thankfully, I haven't run into those people, but I've had games where there are uber-loonies that try so hard to be wacky that it destroys the game.

I think one of the best WoD games I played was a geist game where we used an actual laminated map of NYC subway system as our play mat. We divided the giest covens/packs by train line and it was just the coolest thing ever. My character lived with her friends on the 6 train and to this day I feel all warm and fuzzy and nostalgic when I ride it.

Most of my zany dumbass stories are from the LARP I co-GMed. We were overpopulated so we didn't worry too much about pissing off the players, but we were in a public space so we knew we didn't necessarily have the option of GTFO. Sometimes we were able to make it work, like the guy who wasn't right in the head and couldn't stop from being an obnoxious fuckhead, he was amicable on an intellectual level so he was cool with playing an unseelie Redcap so his aggressive dumbshittery was able to be applied in-game.
Other times it was like the fat Jace-style weapons nerd dumbshit who stormed off yelling because his brilliant plan of "shoot the car with my handgun so it explodes" didn't work because cars don't work like that. Weapons Dumbshit also had a good stunt when he decided he would sneak out the back door of Da Cluub so somebody wouldn't see him. He then tried to walk back in the back door, ignorant of the fact that clubs don't have their backdoors unlocked on the outside because dumbasses would walk in and skip the cover. He threw a fit and stormed off yelling about that one too.
