Worst Authors -

What is the worst author you have read or heard about?

If I wasn't terrified of getting kicked out of college from this author, I probably would make a lolcow thread. But I will say who.

For me, I guess it would be Cassandra Clare. I used to like her works, but her personality is offputting to me. She has a massive history in the HP fandom. Her plagiarism ISN'T the bad portion, actually. It's how she responded to those accounts. She's brought police into the picture with a few other people back in 2001. It only resurfaced as COB came out and it's movie. Someone almost got kicked out of university because this person didn't like the plagiarism.

I guess it was considered "Cassiegate" Either way, her work isn't that good anymore. It's the same premise rehashed between her series. I mean, you can clearly state the premise of each series because it was the same.

What.

The CC wank was in the early 2000s, is it really worth a thread?
Apparently it resurfaced after her movie came out, and more problems came out from it.

She also has a history of getting her fandom to call colleges when it comes to those that dislike her work, similar to what Anne Rice did. Though, it was through use of a lawyer. Apparently she took it as an offense to call her out on plagiarism and made it a point to blacklist you.

Well, hopefully you made sure your Kiwifarms account cannot be connected to your real name, so as to keep your academic career safe from the wrath of rabid fanfic authors.

But if she's still acting like a spastic online, sure , go ahead and post a thread on her. With some luck, there's recent thread material.

Doing so now. Hopefully, she's not as bad as she was back then.

@Pinkamena Diane Pie Please do make the thread. I want more information on this drama. I bought the first book, the resume looked interesting, but shelved it to read it later. Then, I accidentally saw the movie on TV and decided to give it a go. I found the movie TERRIBLE and this really put me off of reading the book. I know this isn't fair, but I found the Twilight movie thousand times better than the book (although the movie is still shitty), so I thought that a similar scenario might've played out. I'm trying really hard to muster the will to pick up City of Bones and read it, after watching that lousy-ass movie.

These young-adult-fiction/fanfiction writers all seem to be pretty terrible. I read Twilight and thought it was shit, I had to struggle to finish it. Took me more than a month, and I was on college vacations. I hated the excessive sugary fluff, I hate Meyer's descriptions of the characters (or situations, or anything, really), nothing really seems to HAPPEN and the story just drags on and on forever. It was a struggle to finish the book, and it took even more persuasion from my friends to go watch the movie. It's very much wasted potential.

I want to nominate E. L. James as well. Anything that was based on Twilight fanfiction (unless it's a parody or extreme deconstruction) should emmanate terribleness, and I've read (and listened to) enough passages of Fifty Shades of Grey to confirm it. In fact, I consider Fifty Shades to be a step down from Twilight (but it derives from it, so I guess that's only natural).

As far as I'm aware, Anne Rice is very leaning towards drama, and author drama is always very juicy. However, I'm not going to judge her writing based on that, especially when I haven't read any of her books.

Well, I will do the thread, but I really lack knowledge on HP. Have you read the books at all? Apparently most of the drama is surfaced from her fanfic of HP and the Harry Potter copy cats. Though, I only have the first book, so I`m only going by what has been stated by the fans itself. (Which will be posted in a hour)

I have read the Harry Potter books, but not the Mortal Instruments books. Also, I had no idea she wrote HP fanfiction or that there was drama related to it. I will get around to reading some sort of review or recap online, to better enjoy the drama. I'm a fan of Harry Potter, so this is starting to sound really delicious.

Keep up the good work!

The Cassie Claire wank of yore was one of the most epic wanks of the HP fandom, and that's saying something considering how utterly batshit that fandom was.

The short version is, CC was the author of a very popular fanfic trilogy centered on Draco Malfoy, who was characterised as an awesome snarky badass dark rebel prince instead of the whiny brat he is in the books. It was the origin of the "Draco in leather pants" trope.
It was also full of pop culture references, which is apparently one of Claire's hallmarks.

Only, it turned out that it was heavily plagiarised- it wasn't just references, but entire paragraphs and lines of dialogue borrowed from everything from TV series to YA fiction.
The revelation caused the fandom to go nuclear, there were pro and anti factions, tons of wank on both sides etc.
Finally Claire managed to get off scot-free and reinvent herself as a serious writer. She took down all her fanfics and re-used most of it in her books. So the Mortal Instruments series is pretty much a plagiarism of a plagiarism.

I can't give you links because I'm on my phone right now, but googling "cassandra claire fandom wank" will give you tonnes of stuff. It's all pretty old, though.

For me, the worst author would be Paolini. I know he was a kid when he first started Eragon, but he kept writing as he got older. It was boring and none of the writing made sense. Eragon wasn't a relatable character and Saphira would have been better off if she were silent. The badly created languages tend to get under your skin when you see it show up constantly. No one wants to have to flip to the dictionary in back of the book every few minutes to try and figure out what the characters are saying. It took me forever to finish the first book and I barely got through the sporking.

I came in here to post Paolini; I read the first 3 Eragon books when I was younger. They are ripoffs of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, and barely anything ever happens in the books anyway. Most of the time Eragon is traveling or training or something else boring. He writes with so much purple prose and it really makes reading his works a chore to slog through.

Laurel K Hamilton. The idea of Vampires and werecreatures living out in the open is a great idea, but is often wasted. A lot of her more current work has little to no plot, the petty relationship dramas dominate the story, a self-insert Mary-Sue main character who would make a better villain, it's all the author's personal, self-glorifying spank fodder and insufferable characters.

And it would still probably be better than The Last of Us: Part II. Maybe.
