I'll start with an obvious exceptional one:

You'd HAVE to go for the squirrels. Losing an entire hand would fuck your entire life up. Keeping your index finger and thumb would still allow you to carry on and a few prosthetic fingers would probably look way more realistic than a lifeless dangling hand.
