When the first case showed up in my part of the world, I started doing research to see if there was any evidence for an effective treatment for coronavirus. I found by reading Chinese and Thai sources that there were three drugs that anecdotally showed some evidence of efficacy: Kaletra, which is a combination HIV drug, Tamiflu, and Chloroquine. The first two required a prescription where I live, but Chloroquine didn't, and since malaria is endemic here, I didn't have too much trouble finding some. Had to check a few different pharmacies, but it was there. I bought enough for two courses of treatment, one for me, one for my girlfriend. There were at least 25 boxes of the stuff on the shelf.

Thought the next day I would go back and get two more courses of treatment for vulnerable relatives in the US and send it up there. It was all gone. The clerk said that someone came in and not only bought all that was displayed on the shelf, they bought the other 50 boxes that they had in stock. Anyone who would do that shit with, I'm sure, the intent to resell it at a profit is a horrible person who I sincerely hope gets robbed by the people they are trying to gouge. And given that this is South America, that's a very real possibility.

Kaletra was found to be useless in treating COVID, and the trial was quickly abandoned.

I just saw a story on another board about an elderly couple in the Phoenix area who took chloroquine, and the husband collapsed, dead, within 30 minutes, and his wife is in critical condition. I wondered if they had purchased it online, or from a Mexican pharmacy, and it wasn't what they thought it was.

Yet another poster on that board said they had purchased a chloroquine-containing product that is used for cleaning fish tanks! This is one more reason not to take meds intended for pet or veterinary use!

You are 100% correct about Kaletra. I was researching this around the end of February when the only available information was from East Asia where they were literally trying any drug that they thought might be effective. Turns out that Kaletra wasn't as promising as the anecdotal evidence suggested.

I saw a thing about that couple in Arizona too. Those tards bought aquarium grade chloroquine phosphate and took several times more than a therapeutic dose, which was of course, highly toxic.

EDIT: Found a link to the story: https://ktar.com/story/3040369/arizona-man-dies-after-ingesting-substance-touted-by-president-trump/

Chloroquine phosphate is what the Chinese were using, and while it is effective, the side effects are much more severe than hydroxychloroquine, which is why most countries who have done clinical trials have used the latter drug. That, and chloroquine phosphate is really only used for malaria prophylaxis in regions that have chloroquine sensitive strains of malaria. For that purpose, the dose is usually on the order of 50 mg per day. Hydroxychloroquine is useful for lupus and other autoimmune disorders, and thus is much more widely available in Western countries. The Chinese treatment protocol for chloroquine phosphate indicated a dosage of 500 mg 2x / day for 10 days, subject to continuous monitoring for deleterious side effects, most significantly long QT syndrome and retinopathy. Incidentally, if you're interested in reading the original source that I got the information from, it's here:

All in Mandarin, but Google translate actually does a better job with medical literature than it does with colloquial conversation.

I'm surprised that people aren't gardening more, honestly. The plague hit right at spring time.

It's only March, so for a lot of places the last frost still hasn't arrived. I have seedlings started indoors but won't be transplanting them outside until well into May.

Coronavirus has actually changed what I will be growing this year though. Normally I grow a wide variety of different exotic vegetables, the kind of stuff that is hard to find in produce sections or expensive if you do find it. This year I am just growing basic bitch Zucchini, Cucumbers and Cherry tomatoes. Those three things always give me massive yields and right now thats what I want, big harvests in case the panic buying doesnt stop or something else disrupts the food supply..

The only fancy shit I invested in this year was extra soil and fertilizers as well as a totally jerry-rigged cold frame set up. Many years ago I put bone meal in my garden and it went apeshit. I'm trying it again with some nice chickenshit for fertilizer. Gardening for me has been a learning curve with some years far better than others, but this year I can't risk failure. Yeah, now it's back to the basic bitch yielders. Good luck everyone

Somewhere I made a left turn into 'Don't Starve'. At least at this point I'm hopefully playing the librarian.

From the article: "the park’s outdoor spaces, including trails, remain open to the public to encourage local residents to pursue healthy activity and time in nature. Outdoor recreation like walking, hiking and cycling are exempt from the stay-at-home executive order issued Monday by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer"

Seems easy enough to track down people buying unreasonable perishable stockpiles (e.g. the couple buying EVERYTHING in the grocery meat section) or trying to sell their hoard at gouge prices. Find them, and hang them. No seriously, for 2-3 days track the worst offenders down, hang them on video and put it on the news. Then make clear that anyone with a commercial-grade stockpile of perishable food/medical supplies/sanitary goods can donate it with no consequences at their local police station. Otherwise, they can roll the dice on getting the rope when they try to profit from it.

Problem solved, and nothing of value is lost. Disaster opportunists are subhuman scum. No, I'm not talking about you people that bought a years supply of MREs for your zombie apocalypse fantasy or that bought triple your usual amount of toilet paper because you got spooked, I'm talking about Cletus the enterprising trailerscum hoarding every bottle of hand sanitizer in a 50 mile radius to price gouge or the morons that bought more perishable goods than 10 families could store or use before they expire.

Since this won't happen, I hope hoarders buy aquarium chloroquine and OD on it.

I couldn't keep from cracking up at the lady I saw piling every 2-liter of tonic water she could into her cart the other day. This is all so fun to watch.
You should have told her that Quinine isn't Chloroquine, that even if it was, the concentration in tonic water is too low to be effective, and to not forget the gin.

Today I was trying to load my groceries onto the conveyer and the fucking lady in front of me had divided her stuff up into 2 halves and kept holding the second pile of shit at the end so the cashier would think it was mine. After flubbing her PIN 3 times and not following the on-screen instructions for paying, she finally got it sorted and then said, "Oh, you missed these" and scooted her second hoarde pile down the conveyer. The cashier said, "These too?" and she got really panicked and said, "For work. They're for work." OK, bitch.

Today an asshole friend of mine decided it was a great idea to go store to store looking for Tyson popcorn chicken for her spoiled kids. I told her it was not wise. She said they would start screaming if they didn’t get them.

Oh well, I tried to warn her. It’s going to be shitty when her whole family gets it, including her 60+ year old mother who lives with them, but I guess you can’t get through to everyone.

So, an acquaintance of mine (not actually a friend) has some Facebook posts from two weeks ago that are all of the sudden popping up on my newsfeed again. People have started to comment on it, and watching the shitshow unfold is pretty funny.

This bitch and her boyfriend went to Florida two weeks ago for Spring Break. She posted a TON of vacation photos of her just having the best time. I remember seeing the photos and rolling my eyes so hard at them and saying to myself, "why am I not surprised that this attention whore went to Spring Break?"

Well, for whatever reason, people decided to comment on the vacation photos this week, calling her out for being so dumb and selfish. My favorite exchange has been this:

Boomer: "Oh, nice that you were able to do that while most of us are trying to help everyone fight this thing by staying home."

Dumb bitch: "We're fighting it in our own way."

How do I know this person? She's a sibling of some friends (and they roll their eyes at her BS all of the time, too). I've only met this chick once, and my interaction with her was nuts. She talked my ear off for an hour, telling me about every little "struggle" and "accomplishment" in her life, while not asking me a single damn thing about myself. It was a tornado of a conversation, really. I'm friends with her on Facebook because she sought me out and I didn't want to be rude. Now I'm glad I'm friends with her on Facebook so I can laugh at how dumb she is.

What pisses me off is when people try to hoard perishable food, and buy two months worth of milk/uncanned fruit/meat that will last two weeks at most. I was looking at the empty shelves of my local supermarket and half the stuff that's completely gone cannot be stored for long periods of time.

my roommate bought a shit ton of bread and raw fruit a couple of days ago- hasn't frozen any of it, and (shocker) it's already starting to rot. like did you put any thought into this mass impulse buy? bread isn't hard to make, yeast and flour will last so much longer, and are cheaper in the long run.
and most meat and some cheeses you can freeze and have it last upwards of 6 months, if you have a decent enough freezer, so that's something that is understandable to stockpile.
canned shit doesn't taste the best, but it's the most appropriate thing to bulk up on. kidney, black, pinto, white, and garbanzo beans have a lot of protein and are fairly inexpensive. my local stores still have full shelves of these items. at this point, some people have spent much more money on TP than it costs to get a bidet. it's absurd
