Yandere Simulator has been in development hell since 2014. The first rival (out of 10) has yet to be programmed into the game, making its current state a completely aimless, buggy "sandbox-based" experience. Both fans and haters alike have all come to realize that the game willlikely never come out release when the universe finally succumbs to heat-death. The infamous developer of the game, Alex Mahan, has an existing thread you can catch up on for all of the slow-paced drama generated throughout the years.
Inspired by Mahan and fed up with the wait time, dedicated groups of weaboos and opportunists have managed to start their own yandere games (with hookers! and blackjack!!!), all with varying levels of quality, "success" (failure), and even more varying levels of drama. Imagine a bunch of teens looking at an inexperienced mountain climber struggling to climb up a mountain and then yelling, "THAT'S EASY!1" before trying (and failing) to climb up the mountain themselves. Now imagine said teens are social justice weeaboos craving validation and attention, while the original climber is a weapons-grade incel who attracts a-loggers like flies, and you kinda get the picture. Watashi no Mono (canceled)
The developers called themselves a fangame of Yandere Simulator and went with the novel idea that you played as a Yandere already in a relationship, protecting her senpai from icky competition.
They got a decent way through development before Alex messaged the creators and told them to stop. The official reason is that the developer, Epic Meal dev, wanted to focus on his other games (Archive). He plans on uploading the source code for others to enjoy.

Limerence / The State of Limerence (canceled)
Limerence (later The State of Limerence after some copyright trouble) was an SJW-take on Yandere sim with all the rivals representing part of the minority rainbow. Notable for having a "PR manager" (because that's what you need for a fangame) join the farms to shill for their game.

The plot doesn't seem too sjw to me - after all, you can ruin the lives of black, gay, trans, and autistic people just like the farms!
It's also notable for getting into some gay ops with the team of Love Me, a game (and the first yansim clone) originating from this very forum before it was handed off to other, more dedicated users. @vertexwindi shares most of the story here, & @Fatcat share some choice screenshots from Limerence's ultra private gay ops headquarters chat here. Here are the highlights:
Love Me was not the only group Limerence riled up: apparently this game pissed off Mulberry (YanSim's lead artist, simp, & tracer) so much that she allegedly drew porn of the game's underage characters with "fuck limerence" written on the character's thigh. However, it seems like it was deleted before it could be archived.
The developers decided to fuck off onto a different project, Naporia, because they bit off more than they could chew. They later posted an update on that project, putting it on hiatus due to the "world sucking so bad" (aka triggered into oblivion and head first into activism/slackivism).
After development was canceled, some salty former team member aired their alleged grievances with them. No screenshots, just hearsay.

Lovesick / Love Letter: My True Feelings (Current name)
Came to people's attention when the creator, DrApeis, posted a video on YouTube claiming he recreated yansim in 2 weeks. Before then, he was mainly known for having made two videos analyzing Yansim.
He soon branded his original video as an official announcement trailer for "Lovesick", the better and sexier version of Yansim. The original video was deleted after a copyright music claim, but re-uploaded shortly after with the offending music taken out. You can find an archive of the original here.
Ever since, this particular fangame has generated more controversy than previous ones due to the general handling of the game and the words of the official creators.
As a lot of Yansim's assets would have to be recreated from the ground up, DrApeis may have jumped the gun by announcing his intentions to recreate the game too early. Banworld talks about how much was possibly recreated in 2 weeks.

The team released an embarrassing name change announcement video, complete with sprites, voice acting, and stabbing, just like devpai!
It became #12 trending on YouTube for a brief period of time.
They also made an embarrassing "You have been banned" video. It's an edit of a pre-existing MMD model, a program that lets you make 3D dance videos, so at least it didn't take more time to code.
When the discord for the game was announced, DrApeis got around 100 applications for mods, yet still picked some really incompetent ones. One former Mod had their own re-imagining of yansim on top of DrApeis and friends' own. This isn't for Love Letter, but said former mod's own yansim fangame. They were later kicked from the discoed mod team for biphobia (not sure if archived). Anyway, it's still funny so I'm including it.
There was some mod drama in a google doc that's too fucking long for me to read. Said google doc + archive. It got resolved, and Apeis posted a video claiming it was proof he wasn't Narwhals, another Yansim clone coder. (archive of video) This was later shown to be false, the two are one and the same (for more information, check here).

Former mod NightWhisperer came onto the farms leaking more screenshots of the moderation team being under prepared and generally useless (archive) as @Bramblestar4427 as suggested by their friends. They were also the ones to leak Yandere Dev sending discord messages to DrApeis telling him to stop Love Letter's development (more on that later).

Yes, a half-assed clone was released 3 years after Yandere Simulator's official announcement. It's short, buggy, and looks like a 7th grader made the 2D cutscenes, but holy fuck it's an actual finished product.

Be aware that Alex Mahn/Yandev brings in A-logs like there's no tomorrow, and community members of both Yandere Simulator and it's fangames (and both's haters) have a high chance of infecting the thread. Remember PPE procedure: make a thread on them if they're funny and can't stop posting dumb shit, report them to the mods if they're not.

- Vertexwindi, Fatcat, & others start the project, but someone named Louise got fed up with how slow it moved and suggested "edgy tutorial prompts, awful game design ideas and drastically cutting the game's scope". After Vertexwindi & Fatcat politely rejected her input, she got butthurt and began to create constant drama. The two project heads told her to fuck off shortly after.
- Louise took the lead 2D artist of Love Me with her and they joined Limerence (later the State of Limerance after some copyright trouble).
- Love Me had a team of moles on Limerence's private discord who leaked things to the Love Me squad, with the entire development being a shitshow due to constant backstabbing, shit talking, and other clique bullshit.
- Louise leaked Love Me assets, and then leaked Fatcat's private info when confronted about the former to Limerence. Vertexwindi said he'd burn Love Me down in a second and leak all of Limerence's drama if they didn't stop fucking with Love Me. Limerence team promptly shat themselves and clammed up.

- He has sent his discord mods out to ban people working on "rival" games from the official yandere simulator discord, including games like Heartbreak that broke off from their original Yansim fangame origins.
- He has talked to developers of games like Watashi no Mono and passive aggressively (and pathetically) told them to stop encroaching on his turf, as he totally has sole ownership of the concept of Yandere Simulation games. He messaged the creators of Love Letter on discord and vagueley said he'd killed himself if they continued (he still has not done a flip).
- Went into turbo whining after called out by Love Letter's creators.
