Haven’t seen the video yet, but I’m trying to contain my giggling while in a conference call over fatty getting arrested. How precious. Was the term and the exact changes outlined in the video? Not holding my breath, but I’m hoping these events place more scrutiny on our plump pal. Fantasies of "prison justice" are just fantasy guys. While inmate violence has increased in Canadian prisons ( https://www.theglobeandmail.com/new...ghout-canadian-prison-system/article33295905/ ) inmate violence pales in comparison to the USA or UK.

Further, even if he did get sentenced to incarceration, there would be other options before The Big House. For low level weapons and assault charges *if* he was sentenced to prison it would be for a few days or weeks, not years. He would be eligible to serve his time on weekends ( http://lawfacts.ca/node/66 ) simply by demonstrating a need to take care his mom, or house, or his pathetic business, or citing financial need to work at a Kwicki Mart. Beyond that, a judge could offer house arrest.

In Canada the focus is on rehabilitation and restorative justice, and less on punitive justice. The system here also doesn't sway to mob justice or revenge justice.

I post this only because it is important to manage one's expectations on this. In all of B.C. there are only around 2600 people in real jail ( https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/.../corrections/about-us/divisions/adult-custody ).

Further, he would not be in the federal system unless he's sentenced to more than 2 years. Federal prison here is so lax that many judges sentence the really {bad} people to "two years less a day" to keep them in provincial jails where they at least have to serve 2/3rds of their sentence, have fewer privileges etc.

:/ we don't do criminal justice very well here in Canada and the focus is more about the inmate comfort than on the crime they committed.

Nahh, jails are just overcrowded here and B.C tax payers are allergic to tax hikes to pay for proper prisons that house large amounts of inmates to be built. That is why people committing even serious offences are back on the street the next day with conditions. It's not uncommon for the judge to throw out cases too when it comes to rial. John may end up serving no time at all. He lives in Vancouver where there are more addicts clogging up the jails than ever before. All this works to his advantage. Unfortunately.

Definitely agree. But the flip side of this is that BC jails are more violent and unsupervised than ever, in the unlikely event JY sees the inside of one. I would be very curious to know what the Crown’s Initial Sentencing Position is. I would imagine it’s some sort of conditional sentence and JY will cite “threats” as a mitigating factor.

When trying to explain the lunacy of the Hug-A-Thug program in schools to the teens in my life, I use a rape example. A bit hyperbolic yes, but it removes the muddled nuances the program tries to push. It's one thing to have 2nd graders work out their issues but a different matter entirely when some punk bully is daily tormenting, physically and mentally, another student. We focus far too much on the bullied and not near enough on the bully.

Canadian prisons are soft as fuck. Lots of people deliberately get thrown in over the winter so they don't have to deal with the weather and can instead zone out on seroquel mixed with cocaine (a Susie Q, it's called) or just plain old weed.

He'd probably be worse off in a woman's jail because a lot of those women have been preyed on in their lives and wouldn't hesitate to make his life hell. From what I've heard from male convicts rape is basically non-existent and everyone is basically very chill about doing their time; sign up for one of the many programs on offer, maintain attendance and you'll be well cared for and quite content.
