Originally I was going to mention this in the "what do you hate in videogames" thread, but then realized this is something that can be expanded upon.

Like the title says, what do you think of the prevalence of "Let's Plays" on Youtube and other sites? Personally, if it's a niche game that might not otherwise get any attention, I think it has value. However by and large, IMO here, it seems to have become a collective of annoying fuckers to be continually annoying by talking over video game footage, usually about things that don't even pertain to what's going on screen.

But as I mentioned, that's my (truncated) opinion. Yours?

I watch a lot of Let's PLays, but they are people who know aboout the games and explain everything. My favourites are Agent JR, Roahmythral, (excuse the spelling), and something enigma who does Silent Hill games.

When they are done properly they can be informative and entertaining. But people like pewdepie ruin the whole thing with their crappy versions trying so hard to be funny. To the point that you know it is fake, and they think are they brilliant. He just makes me so angry, because he is crap, yet he gets thousands of viewers watching his cruddiness.

Let's plays are hit or miss. I really enjoyed gamerguy888 back in college because he joked around and would sing to the current game music, I found them really funny. I see let's plays as more comedy than walkthroughs.
Idk if Chuggaconroy is still popular, but his LPs felt more like a walkthrough, it was very "You do X, then Y, because of Z" as if he was explaining to you how to play the game yourself. 888 was more like "I'm doing X, you're probably confused why but don't worry about it", yet he still managed to complete the game.

It depends on the LPer in question. I'm personally a fan of psychadelicsnake, StriHiryu and Markiplier. I hate the childish screamers as much as the next guy, but I enjoy the humor of the LPers mentioned, even though they all have their fair share of screaming.

ChaoticMonki/Cry is cool, but his fanbase really puts me off. So many rabid fangirls.

When I look for LPs, it's usually for background noise.
to me, the best LPs are ones that have more than one person in it (usually a duo is fine).
example might be jon tron era-Game grumps when jon and arin would usually discuss the game, compared to when Dan came in and the conversations seemed stale.
I'd like to see a duo do a LP of an RPG and discuss it calmly or something while playing through the whole game

It's kind of a hit or miss for me. I hate Pewdiepie with a fiery passion though.

I think LPs are useful if you are stuck on a certain level of a video game. Sure, you can look up written walkthroughs, but there are some people who have an easier time understanding things when they watch and listen. Sure, you can't see the controls when they are recording footage of the gaming screen, but you can listen to the directions and see what should happen if you use the correct controls. Sometimes they might even give you hints that could help you at certain points of the game. I'm not going to fault the gamers for making a few quips here or there, as long as it doesn't take up a good chunk of the video. Generally, I think it can make an LP video more entertaining to watch.

Lowtax and Shmorky's Gaming Garbage is the only acceptable LP on the internet and you are wrong if you think otherwise.

I don't know how anyone can find Game Grumps funny. All they've ever done is make 'funny' sounds and say a lot of...well...nothing. it reminds me of some sperg last night at a party I was at. He had a phone on him and was loudly playing video game music and if he wasn't doing that he was laughing...by himself mind you...at stuff like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIWPU-VJ64I

I hated Egoraptor before meeting that sad, awkward inept man. Now I just do more.

You really have that the wrong way round. Danny coming in helped focus their commentary on the game itself, rather than Jon allowing Arin to voice his terrible opinions on things. I still preferred Jon and Arin, though.
LPs are fine. I don't watch many of them, but I used to. The closest I get to watching LPs now is Game Grumps and Cr1tikal.

I hate them, all of them. I enjoy JonTron videos when he's alone and reviewing a video game but not when he's playing with Arin and making those terrible commentaries, breaking Drill Dozer copies or talking to his mother on the phone while trying to play.

Let's Plays are the closest I can get to experiencing console games. I don't mind them.

I've never quite understood the point, aside from getting attention/money for the people making the videos. Given a choice between playing the game and watching someone else play the game while talking over it, I'd choose the former every time. It's like watching a movie with the commentary track on, if the commentary was fart noises and Scandinavians screaming about rape.

^I watch Let's Plays to see how other people react to games that I either like or am interested in. If they're not blind, they're considered walkthroughs.

I also treat Lp's as more comedy entertainment. The only 2 I watch are Northernlion and Markiplier. Both of them make me laugh for different reasons. Mark has that in your face cartoonish humor that I sort of like and then when I want to have more dry humor I turn on some NL.

Northernlion and I have similar taste in games too so usually if he reviews a game there's a good chance I could pick it up and enjoy it too.

I think they can be entertaining to watch. My boyfriend loves the shit out of RoosterTeeth's LPs and I'll watch a few here and there.

Of course, then there are those who watch a LP and think that counts as playing the game or whatever. Watching and playing are two different experiences. My weeaboo sister does that so much, it's annoying. She sometimes acts like she's a good gamer for knowing what happens despite never having played that game.
For example: Corpse Party. Never played any of the games, not even the original (or rather, the Rebuilt one). Acts like she has and she's such a huuuuge fan. She doesn't have the excuse of not having the money or a PSP.

It's like... are you just too lazy to play the game yourself? As I said, they can be entertaining as dicks, but using it to say you've played the game is just lazy. How can you be that lazy about vidya? VIDYA!

tl;dr LPs are good entertainment (YMMV depending on the LPer), but they aren't a substitute for actually playing the game.
