It's moved to YouTube after the influx of Reddit videos. Now you have people editing their comments to thank people for likes. At least in Reddit there's some kind of karma system but YouTube doesn't even count the amount of likes you get per comment.

I remember earlier coming to the conclusion that they all come from some offsite community, be it some server or forum or whatever else. I think it was how they could all show up at once to some random monkey video that doesn't even future abuse, not unlike how some communities will "brigade" other ones they don't like, and possibly they were all using similar terms but my memory is foggy on that one.

Like Reddit, you receive a notification for when you reach a like milestone (5, 10, 50 100, etc.), so my guess is that they feel obligated to say something about it when notified.

The worst thing about these edited victory laps is the classic “thanks for the gold, kind stranger!”

Mainly this annoys me because, and I’m aware how gay this is, I was awarded Reddit gold once. It was years ago, before they introduced silver and all the other custom money sink awards they do now, gold was the only award you could give. So I get the notification and notification tells me who gave me gold. You know who it is, why not thank them directly through DM. Or if you have to edit the post, use their username?
