Anyone who's been following YouTube knows that YouTube has been getting increasingly harsh on people who relied on YouTube as their sole source of income, but the last year in particular was brutal. After an infamous hit piece by The Times about how ads are showing up next to extremist content (along with PewDiePie going from media darling to problematic shitposter and the whole Elsagate saga), advertisers left YouTube en masse and YouTube's responded by making it harder to monetize videos in general. The Logan Paul "dead body" vlog was the final straw, causing so much backlash everywhere and so many "Why isn't YouTube doing something" posts on social media.

Now, YouTube has required partners to now have 1000 subscribers and 4000 watched hours of content a month. This article outlines the changes pretty well, many of these accounts are at the absolute bottom of YouTube, making under $100 a year in most cases. Furthermore, YouTube claims that humans are going to have to vet all videos from top partners now. In other words, kind of like how it was before YouTube gave everyone partnership where you had to get a lot of views to even consider being looked at.

Due to this, YouTube has sent out most of these partners automated emails telling them their content will be demonetized if they do not meet the threshold within 30 days.

This means that there's been a lot of interesting comments, mainly from smaller accounts. The official blogpost is full of people desperate to sub4sub to try to get 1000, just like the old days of YouTube and surprisingly it's civil.

There's even the "I'm going to Zippcast" posters:

Twitter isn't happy either:

This literally does nothing to help.

Thats like someone trying to clean their dog's piss stains on your carpet by smearing rabbit turds on the piss. Now you have two problems to deal with, and that person isnt listening to you complain.

YouTube will always be a corporate entity with zero fucks to give, but backstabbing smaller creators without warning is absurd. The site's always been criticized for absolute lack of communication, and this is no exception.

This is all clearly a business move disguised as progressive change. I hope people see that

im noticing a trend

Someone big gets into controversy> Youtube as a knee jerk reaction> sellouts start bitching instead of doing something

It's hard to really do anything since most YouTubers have zero means of contacting a human being at YouTube. The only effective thing to do is scream and ree till enough people start screaming.

Uhhh you know that's what advertisers want, right?

I meant to type people, but yes. I know advertisers would love to see this. At the same time though, itll drive away people from supporting YouTube in the future.

This change isn't even that bad. If it was a default requirement from the beginning, nobody would say anything.

Also anyone trying to get into YouTube just to make money in 2018 is an exceptional individual and deserves to get demonetized.

4000 hours is still an extremely absurd amount if you only have a 1000 subs. If there was an hour clause in the old agreement, its definitely not 4000 hours

But that's how it always was. This was especially the case back when YouTube first started. Unless this is YouTube trying to push the reset button and it's blowing up in their face, it sounds reasonable to me. It sucks that smaller channels keep getting ignored and pushed out of the algorithm, but this rule sounds like it should've been a requirement from the get-go.

YouTube in the past rewarded view counts over view time, something that allowed a myriad of content to gain exposure and actual revenue. It wasnt until the advent of cam whores and titty click bait that YouTube began to incentize view time.

Unfortunately that meant vlog channels and pranks flourished under the new system, driving away animators and FX short films. If anything, the new system is a flanderization of that, REALLY pushing people to shovel shit content just to fill a quota.

This isnt old YouTube

On the one hand, Youtube is staffed completely by idiots, and any time they ever change something, whether it be their policies, or updates to websites, they always seem to fuck it up. No one ever seems happy when Youtube rolls out a new change.

On the other hand, these worthless fucks need to get REAL jobs, and stop getting paid to react to slenderman videos. Fuck, we're creating a lazy society.

Also known as Youtube's main customers.

Let's do math, shall we. Let's assume you make videos and every view lasts on average 5 minutes. To get to 4000 hours in a year, you need 135 daily views. According to SocialBlade calculator, and assuming the default CPM range of betwen 25¢ and $4, the yearly revenue is between $12 and $195.
Dayum, look at those riches!

There are several kinds of creators that are going to be hit by this:
  • people doing disjointed videos on various topic – they have multiple popular videos, but few subs. This includes DIY tutorials, but also those Elsa×Spiderman shit. Just do product placement or something if you want money.
  • people doing infrequent high quality videos – many subs, low viewing time. They are already getting peanuts from Youtube, they should have moved to Patreon or other e-begging platform ages ago.
  • one-hit wonders – they usually enable monetization too late. Just sell your vid to a TV station or some shit, your 2Mview cat video will be the only thing people will watch on you channel anyway.
  • legitimately small channels, either niche, just starting, or just being lazy and not doing much – keep doing it, or give up. Those few pennies wouldn't change anything in your life anyway.
  • shit channels that post stolen content or clickbait – good riddance.
Youtube owes you nothing.

I also checked my subscriptions and I found one decent-looking channel with 995 subs. The rest were either unaffected or don't earn much anyway.
So I guess everything will be fine and maybe (:optimistic::optimistic::optimistic:) Youtube will finally be able to get its shit together in other aspects.

The irony is that people might HAVE to resort to reaction videos if they want to still be a partner and get ad revenue

4000 hours isnt going to view themselves

Product placement and sponsorship has always been the go-to way to get monetary revenue. Jacksfilms is the ideal example of this, making ad placements as memes for his videos.

I guess I am overreacting a little. Still a shitty thing to give YouTubers 30 days to make a 4000 hours to get their check in the mail

One hit wonders already do that. Every single channel with a bunch of 30 view videos and a video with 3-4 million is always going to have a notice in the description that says something like "Junkin Media Verified" or "Licensing by Viralhog" with a contact email and a content ID setup there for people reuploading it. They're in the business of buying out rights to viral videos that make it big from normies who don't have partnerships and minor channels otherwise.

Junkin actually sued RWJ over this (a former big YouTuber who's channel consisted of riffing on viral videos and vids he found) and settled.

You gotta wonder why nobody has seriously tried, to offer an alternative to youtube. I know vidme got shut down not too long ago, but even that was not what I would call serious.

Somebody with bigmoneyz, needs to come in and slap kiketube in the anus.

Youtube isn't an independent entity. They're owned by Google which has both the money and political connections to destroy any emerging competition.

It's unprofitable. Google is eating the loss in hopes that being the lead video hoster will someday pay off but smaller companies can't afford to burn cash like that.

Thats why I was hoping, for someone like microsoft or maybe even amazon, to jump in and try something.

I had no idea it was unprofitable.
I thought that a site this popular and with zero competition, would be able to break even at least.
