You gotta wonder why nobody has seriously tried, to offer an alternative to youtube. I know vidme got shut down not too long ago, but even that was not what I would call serious.

Somebody with bigmoneyz, needs to come in and slap kiketube in the anus.

But that's how it always was. This was especially the case back when YouTube first started. Unless this is YouTube trying to push the reset button and it's blowing up in their face, it sounds reasonable to me. It sucks that smaller channels keep getting ignored and pushed out of the algorithm, but this rule sounds like it should've been a requirement from the get-go.

The main problem I have is that smaller channels are not recommended because the algorithm doesn't allow them the same promotion. Therefore if you are just starting out or are very small it's far too hard to grow amongst the generic cat videos, reactions, clickbait and the Pewdiepie wannabes that somehow got enough 12 year olds to view them.

Youtube should have a section that promotes and recommends smaller channels. Instead they will promote sponsored content you don't care about or spam you with Youtube TV popups you don't care about. And since there's no real alternative you are stuck just dealing with it all.

Youtube is not a job. You cannot depend on it for a lifetime of income and I'm actually glad that reality is being hammered home. Get a real job, kids. if you are using Youtube for anything more than supplemental income and have no real backup plan you are just screwing yourself. I hope all these more successful youtubers are putting their money away and not spending it on every shiny new toy in sight like they are in an 80s hairband on its 14th minute of fame blissfully unaware that Nirvana is coming. Because you are going to eventually get screwed unless you are someone like Pewdiepie. Some people really do need a wakeup call.

Are all these beauty gurus going to be doing this in 20 years? In many ways the beauty trend on Youtube has replaced fashion magazines that I don't even know how they manage to stay in print anymore. But it's very oversaturated. Everyone with a vagina is doing them. And even vaginas by proxy like that weirdo Jeffree Star. You aren't going to break into the beauty guru market as easily anymore. I don't care how good you are at applying the latest Fenty product to your face. Get an education girls. You won't be a Youtube millionaire. Youtube is not a sugar daddy you don't have to have sex with to get money from.

Same with all the LPers who think yelling retardedly at a game while pressing buttons will magically fatten their bank accounts. Oversaturated.

COD clickbait? Oversaturated.

Minecraft? Oversaturated.

Either be unique enough to stand out while simultaneously promoting the hell out of yourself or don't quit your day job.

In fact, keep your day job. Because if you quit working because Youtube bux unless you make so many millions you are set for life you are going to be sorry.

It sucks for small creators and I think that the algorithm is the main reason that it does. Hard to get subscribers when your videos don't come up in a search because they are buried under legions of screaming idiots doing the same thing as you but more popular. But I don't want to hear bitching from people who literally thought Youtube was a better choice than traditional employment. Like that vlogger moaning about not getting a free hotel stay in exchange for good reviews. Can you imagine guests having to deal with her posing for selfies all day long and recording videos when they are trying to relax?

People just need to face the facts that the Youtube free ride was destined to end up like this. After Logan Paul and all of those creepy Spiderman and Elsa and Finger Family videos something had to give. Because unlike TV and radio advertisers weren't really choosing what content their products were promoted on. The ads were just running on monetized videos. So naturally, just like when a radio or TV program got their bloomers in a bind, advertisers wanted to shy away from anything on Youtube that made them look bad. Even if it was often much ado about nothing would you want your product being featured on a pedobait video featuring a guy in a Spiderman costume?

It's not really a surprise that monetization got abused. It's too bad for anyone just trying to make a little side money. But people trying to make Youtube their job should have really known better. You have to wonder what their parents thought. It's like not wanting your kid to go into show business and the music industry because it seldom pays off.

I like how the timeline seems to suggest that Logan Paul suicide forest was the trigger for "you must have 1,000 subs and 4,000 watched hours" when Logan Paul clearly exceeded them by several orders of magnitude. How they even justify paying the bottom 90% nobodies when Youtube has never been profitable is still a mystery.

I don't understand why Youtube doesn't implement some sort of channel rating system-not rating as in like/dislike, but as like, PG-13, MA-17, the ones we have for TV and movies. Creators set their channels as a rating, advertisers pick what ratings they want their ads on. Is this a retarded idea, because it seems to me it would solve the problem of kid-friendly advertising being played before a swear filled rant about how X sucks.

I think they tried something like that some months back with a parental filter, but between setting up vaguely worded or even just plain bizarre parameters for it, not being able to distinguish between legit "this isn't appropriate for kids" and REEEEing, and no humans to screen for errors/false flags, a lot of legit channels (particularly charities) got demonitized and the whole thing fell flat on its face.

It's an excuse to. Youtube's running at a loss (or breaking even, best case scenario) and they need to cut costs. It's like with the "Adpocalypse", which was triggered by the Pewdiepie controversy but the real motive was not having to pay all the low effort channels that produced nothing but videos snarking about other youtube videos ala LeafyIsHere and all his clones.

No one with the deep enough pockets cares and holds the necessary political views to motivate them enough to care.

Yeah you'd need someone whos a multi billionaire willing to bet on a platform that is almost guaranteed to run at a loss for years until they figure out how to moderate/flag enough for advertisers to take them seriously.

That person would have to also be either conservative or classically liberal and be disgusted with the current TV and internet video recommended content. If it came from anywhere, it'd probably be outside the US, some sort of joint venture between companies. Maybe in Russia or China or the UAE.

I especially like how all of a sudden the Reddit tards went from shrieking about how ADBLOCK IS LITERALLY THEFT THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE TO USE IT to suddenly advocating for adblock overnight.

Everybody with a datacap was supposed to sacrifice 5 megabytes to earn YT 1/100th a penny. Everybody with a PC was supposed to risk utter harddrive annihilation for that 1/100th a penny. But as soon as the 1/100th pennies only go to Pewdie Pie and suicide guy, LMAO.

it's worth mentioning that over a year ago most channels i care about (largely gun-related ones) were demonetized as they were too political or not advertiser friendly. rather than removing content or anything, they kept posting things on youtube and didn't care. they instead largely migrated to another site (Full 30) or started doing Patreon subscriptions. this was worked out fairly well for most channels as this particular group of content creator already has income from some other source so income from Youtube was more or less strictly used to maintain the videos and buy things for review or showcasing.

i really don't think that cat videos and reaction spammers will be able to do that.

It boggles my mind that uploaders insist they own YouTube and can dictate the rules. Yes, YouTube is staffed by speds and tends to treat their users like wet farts, but the users are playing ball on a 90 billion dollar corporation's front lawn.

Getting paid to play video games 12 hours a day or scream about video games 12 hours a day is too good to be true. The uploaders who were lucky enough to make a comfortable wage off that should have budgeted every penny that didn't cover living expenses into an interest earning savings account. They should have planned for a stable future by getting a higher education or putting their learned editing skills on a resume. Now their unstable ground is quaking yet they're STILL clinging to this pipe dream, screaming "muh inalienable Fair Use!" and "muh ad money!" because the bully company they are squatting on is treating them so unfairly.

You know whos really to blame? That's right...

Straight White Men? Really. Because aren't SJWs majorly responsible for getting videos flagged and pulled on the site? Didn't the advertisers do their massive exodus in the first place because of "white supremacy" videos? Right, and there's that lawsuit against Google for discriminating against white men.

Migrating to Twitch won't be much better, as it is also infested with SJWs and feminist spergs.

The ultimate irony is how these idiots spoiled everything for everyone, but they're too fucking dumb to realize it. I want a compilation video of sjws whining about losing their hipster welfare.

I'd argue that Youtube is absolutely a job. Whether or not we'd all be better off if it weren't is another story, but it's a job nonetheless. "Either be unique enough to stand out while simultaneously promoting the hell out of yourself or don't quit your day job" applies to show business, the music industry, the art world, and pretty much any other creative industry under the sun. The thing is, whether you were using Youtube for some side cash, to fluff up your day job, or actually trying to make a living out of it, there was always the sense that you sort of got out of it what you put in -- and if nothing else, that maybe one of your random videos of your cats/kids would go viral one day. People learned that they like that. One way or another, I don't think that's going away.

It's honestly going to be interesting to see what comes out of this.

A whole lot of unfiltered truth.

More and more as of late I am feeling less sympathy for youtubers who are getting squeezed out of ad money as a whole. Too many times I have heard some shitty generic channel yell censorship for the fact that they are not getting paid enough to do shitty LPs, or Topical Political Channel™ #53252325 regurgitate a known incorrect fact the same way for the millionth time and claim the same. Oh no I got le shoah'ed xdddd for actively saying you should beat women who aren't your GF! Oh no I go oppressed cuz I made too many kill whtey videos! I am literally being oppressed for not getting paid to say the above!!!

Its literal all the same. Go and look on the front page of youtube signed out with ad block off. It is the most cancer tier shit you will see. Lowest common 12 year old denominator shit. I get its not gonna all be great but fuck you have to serious dig to find something mildly ok. To me they are now just as responsible for making this shit TV 2.0 as google is.

It also does not help that there are still good youtubers out there that do it as a hobby, and their content is a million times better. All because they tend to give more honest views and impressions and are not slaves to the hot topic algorithm trend. Despite all this crying over ad money being cut. If anything I am hoping more and more it gets cut down to nothing to optimistically clear out some of the fucking cancer.

I mean it can 'be a job" sure, but the smart thing is to not put all your eggs in one basket. And every youtuber that decided to get into programs like affiliate marketing, amazon stores, sponsorship, and the like were really ahead of the curve and just being plain ol' smart. It's good to have a diversified income because if something tanks, well at least it's not a total loss.

Also I do have to agree somewhat with @UnclePhil, as the people earning their money should've been smart with it. Put it into savings, invest in something that'll help your business/efforts, or hell slap that you do video editing on Linkedin - even if all you do is arrange clips in a top 10 list hey, that's something. Do you make your own thumbnails? Guess what? You've got experience in graphic design!

And to everyone going "MUH ALGORITHM"...if all you do is post your videos on YouTube and pray that people stumble on it, you stupid. Find a goddamn subreddit to post your videos to or at the bare minimum share that shit to your FaceBoook.

Honestly I can't say I feel much sympathy for YouTube either. If you cultivate an environment that caters to making it so that the Pewdiepies, Logan Pauls, Game Grumps, and Nostalgia Critics of the world to turn a profit for you, then you're just going to get infested with low-effort imitators doing the same thing but worse.
