They're legitimately between a rock and a hard place with the "kids" content. It's pretty fucked that a website that requires users to be over age 13 is still held legally responsible for kids sneaking onto their service. Nobody under 13 should be let loose on the internet, Jesus fuck. Indulging these people will just gut the internet even more.
Like the only reason they even have the so-called kids content in the first place is because careless idiot parents just plop their babies on tablets all day.

Maybe if they restricted the age limit to 13 and above, or if these also so-called adults didn't go around being careless with their kids, this shit wouldn't be happening in the first place. Or at least not to this same extreme.

While I can't say for sure what'll happen in the short term, this is definitely going to bite their collective asses in the long term because this always affects them just as much as it does the YouTubers and (eventually) the advertisers the site attempts to pander to.

I agree with most of your post but while the UK government hates tech they are also as thick as pigshit on it. (Just look at how they "managed" to block thepiratebay)
Fucking LIVELEAK is a UK institution and there's never been any effort to ban it.
I didn't know liveleak was being run by the British.

The difference with liveleak is they will remove and ban the more controversial like the Christchurch vid while bitchute from what I have seen will let anything be up.

Honestly, I think YouTube is just collapsing under its own weight.

In the early days of the web, the average person who wanted to make some sort of internet content would, at the very least, have to learn some basic HTML and sign up with a free hosting service for a couple of megabytes of space. And ever since then, there’s been a constant push to make things bigger, easier, and more accessible to everyone.

YouTube’s problem is that they achieved that past the point where it was sustainable. I mean, it really shouldn’t be surprising that a site that allows everyone and their grandma to upload and download large amounts of bandwidth-sucking content is heavily dependent on advertising money and unable to turn a profit. It’s been running on borrowed time for a while.

The issue now is that so many of its users have gotten used to this idea of having One Big Website for all of their video content needs that they probably can’t conceptualize anything else. If YouTube kicks the bucket without a viable alternative lined up, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

The worst part is that used to be the defense for most websites. Don’t want your kids seeing this? Well, we clearly stated when you signed up that you have to be 13 or older to use this site, so you’re the one violating the TOS.

Just another reason that rules need to be enforced regularly and consistently.

I guess this is just an excuse for Youtube to wipe away content that scares normies or isn't politically aligned to the neoliberal/woke agenda

In regards to the next big platform I'll take a wildcard guess and say Amazon starts making Twitch be able to host prerecorded content like Youtube in a attempt to lure Youtubers over who dont stream
Nah, Twich is much worse, its owned by Jeff Bezos, the same fuck who owns the Washington Post and is very responsible for the woke agenda still being alive while he fucks his own workers in the ass with a spiked metal dildo.

Edit: I would also like to add, that you can't delete your account, only disable.

The only entity other then google that has the money and equipment to underwrite something like YouTube would be the US federal government.

Under normal circumstances this idea would seem abhorrent to me...but I kinda want to see a Government backed "public" platform in the same sort of vein as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting only instead it would be for citizen generated content as opposed to reruns of the Antiques Roadshow. And unlike Google the Federal Government at least on paper has to pay lip service to constitutional rights.

Might be fun if the Antitrust case against google goes foreword the Feds could try and nationalize youtube as part of the break up. It's a shitty solution but a better one then the present.
Bud after working for the government, not trying to be a libertarian, but they fucking suck at programming and using efficent software and automation tools. Everything is done by the lowest bidder and the idea of them having them create a public equivalent to Youtube will be a giant black hole for tax dollars.

I will probably sometime soon switch from gmail to outlook on a side note.

I believe this is them continuing their eternal march to removing the entire concept anyone being able to upload videos. The "no longer commercially viable" fits the majority of channels.

No other company can really host a similar service effectively because it doesn't make money on its own. They make money but selling targeted ads based on the massive amount information google has collected on everyone. They also sell their stockpile of data which includes watching habits.
Agreed, for the most part. YouTube is a loss leader for Google, and the only other company that I can think of that would have both the resources to bankroll a viable YouTube alternative without a high risk of going woke is Mind Geek.

They already made a fuckton of money through their porn sites and they have the knowledge and resources to keep a possible YouTube competitor running.

Don't get me wrong, they're every bit as bad about data mining and selling personal data to advertisers as Google is, but they don't have any political agenda aside from making money, unlike Google/Alphabet.

However, if Mind Geek or any other major company were to launch a direct YouTube competitor, they'd have to wait a little and see just how badly Google fucks themselves over with their newest policy changes.

YouTube could be profitable. All they have to do is put a fucking "tip jar" on every video like a patreon and then take 10% of the e-begging shekels. The problem is that the types of videos most likely to have people "tip" are social commentary, independent news and political discussion. Not one person of the millions who watched "Baby Shark" will give a dime to Pink Fong, but at least ten percent of the 100,000 people watching the latest Tim Pool video will drop some cash on it.

YouTube knows this too. its why they haven't done it. They dont want to promote things they dont like for purely political reasons rather then economic. Alphabet keeps things the way it is not to make money but to prevent other people from doing it.

Apple, Microsoft, Amazon all could if they wanted to. Maybe GitHub will introduce video gists? Or everyone starts abusing archive.org.
Actually Microsoft seems to have a streaming service via Xbox, I think. Some high profile Twitch guy jumped ship for it, or so I recall hearing?
